  1. What I don't like is the consoley feel, the grenade indicators and jump over this wall buttons but I guess cross platform development is becoming more popular (much to my disgust).

Acutally the grenade indicator was very usful because sometimes it was hard to see the grenades. Also the jump-over button was cool in my opinion.

Just because PC games are getting more like console games it doesn't mean that the gameplay is getting simple. Of course COD2 is a true fps and there are not even team commands or something like this, but if you play it in "hard" mode you can get into some really tricky sitations, where you have to look for a good cover position, perfect shoot-and-cover timing, throwing smoke grenades, and more...

In my opinion that's the future of computer gaming: user-friendly, intuitive controls BUT deep and complex gameplay experience. COD2 is a step in the right direction. (Of course there are more games like this already available)

  2. I never understood what the big thing was about Halo, but I think I like Perfect Dark Zero, even tho it might seem just a tad similar to Halo.

Why similar? Because both are fps?

The ragdoll physics are weird indeed, but I wonder why the player shot at the dead bodies? To make sure that they are dead?

  3. What the? I was under the impression that the skins were no bigger than 512x512 ! Then again I only ran HL2 medium so it's not like I'd actually notice such high-res details even if it does still look really nice.

Speaking of 1024 textures, I remember trying to run SOF2 on the highest settings, most of the textures are that big and running it was a nightmare! I don't think you need to go any bigger than 512, because that size is a perfect balance between high-res detail and memory management. But hey I still map for HL1, what do I know? :P

^^ Don't want to make another thread, what's the average skin size for HL2 character parts? (ie face, hands, body etc)

there are only 2 parts: head and body. size is mostly 1024x1024.

the gman's head of the HL2 intro is 2048x2048

  4. collecting comics, open & read them = ok

collecting comics and keeping them in a plastic cover forever = nerdy

buying a collector's edition dvd/game because it has some cool exclusive and usefull features = ok

buying a collector's edition AND the normal edition and every possible edition that exists = nerdy

having 3 or 4 action figures of your favorite childhood hero on your shelf = kinda ok

having a whole shitload of figures, still in the original wrapping, bought for hunderds of dollars on ebay and geek conventions = definitely nerdy

  5. I can run any game perfectly, including that FEAR demo on top marks, bf2 top marks, ect. But source runs like shit no my computer. What gives?

Try to make large outdoor maps in FEAR and you would have super bad performance.

Or try to make detailed indoor rooms in BF2. I suppose it would look kinda ugly.

Source is somewhere in the middle. The indoor parts look nice but not great because of the simple lighting / shadow system. On the other hand you can make larger outdoor stuff, but not as large as BF2.

It's somewhere in the middle, you know what I mean :)

  6. Finaly volumetric clouds, I mailed valve about this before Source was released, Source were not supposed to have that.

What's the difference between volumetric clouds and volumetric smoke? Both is made up of particles, right?

I guess you could make that in source as well.

    Anyway it looks stunning

  7. DESIGNER (LEVEL)

    GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

    • 3+ years game industry or related design experience

    • PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED, prefer at least one commercial title shipped.

Reqs like this makes me sad. Also, those of us that can actually fill that req have a job.

You're right. Such requirements do really suck. Why don't companies just judge by the portfolio? I mean it's not like that there are sooo many unemployed game designer out there.
