@Hourences
I just checked your portfolio page - pretty stunning maps and also your career is quite impressive.
You worked for Epic? Have you actually worked at the headquarters in the USA or was it freelance work via internet? Tell me a little bit about your experience

I'd be glad if those people who already work for the game industry could answer this question: is that article completely true?
is it really like being a workhorse for some unqualified art director and just being "the-guy-who-makes-concrete-textures" or something like that? how much creativity is left in your work as a professional artist?
I'm eager to know more about your work. what is the working atmosphere like? is it more like a big family, or a "big boss hierarchy"? what about those so-called crunch times, are they really that tough?

I'm against beating children but that spoiled brat deserves some ass kickin.
On the other hand, it's probably the parents fault and they kinda deserve the monster they created.

...But I'm still a bit disappointed, because I expected groundbreaking games from Rare like in the good old N64 days.
Obviously you havent been paying attention to Rare the last couple of years if you thought that. However I must confess that I had a slight hope that they could pull out something good.
hmm I heard that a lot of people left the company after Microsoft acquired it. Where did all these guys go to? There must have been a lot of talented people working there.

name one cool game that makes it worth buying
Kameo: The elemtal power(or what the name is) It looks soo coool, but i ended up with Call of Duty2 witch i think its rly good, i like running for life with your thompson while enemy flag cannons shoots all around you

Kameo is definitely a cool game, as well as Perfect Dark Zero. But I'm still a bit disappointed, because I expected groundbreaking games from Rare like in the good old N64 days.
COD2 is also available on PC and it looks just the same.
Don't get me wrong, 360 is a fine console but for someone who already owns a good PC, there are few reasons to actually buy the xbox.
If I had enough free time and money to spare I definitely would buy the box, but at the moment I rather wait for better games or the PS3 (or maybe Nintendo Revolution).

name one cool game that makes it worth buying
word!
I mean half of the games are also available on PC (if you have a good GPU/CPU you can even enjoy the same quality of graphics) and the rest is just ok.
There are no exclusive uber games, that make me wanna buy that console. Even the Gamecube has more appealing gamecube-only games atm.

the shaded 3d view is an old feature. worldcraft had that too.
the ability to move vertexes in 3d view is kinda useless without a gizmo.
the new model viewer is ok, but now it's harder to find a model due the lack of thumbnails.
nice update but I'm not excited...

In this one you've made trims to the stairs, in roof you don't have one. Trim is like and edge or something like that, hope you understood

I hope those round edges are func_details. Also use smoothgroups.

There's another reason why console is more popular than pc: the price
I mean a top graphics card costs more than two x-boxes. you need also a fast cpu, a shitload of ram, a big harddrive, and more...

Valve should burn in hell for their model compiling system. Also creating textures without 3th-party tools is a pain in the ass.
When I create maps I want to focus on design and gameplay and not spend a shitload of my precious free time on such issues. Of course Erik Johnson has a point when he talks about, how mod teams try to act like pros, but blaming the community for the lack of mods is just wrong. And of course "next-gen" stuff like normal mapping requires more knowledge, but I still see many ways how to improve the workflow. I hope UE3 is going to be a step in the right direction.

I see, thanks!
But what's with the detailsprites.vmt, how can you replace the original one without getting problems in other maps?
-
to not _cheat_ in other maps you shall incule those two files later in your final bsp file. so the engine will load your textures only if you're playing the level they were made for.
maybe it's a stupid question, but how can you include them in the bsp file? i don't get it.
also i don't really understand how the detail.vbsp works. i thought there's only one detail.vbsp file for the entire game. so if you give your map to someone else you need to give him your modified detail.vbsp as well or else he would have a map without grass. right?
but what if this person gets another custom map from someone else + another modified detail.vbsp (which overwrites yours) - your map would be without grass...
i never worked with detail.vbsp before, so maybe i misunderstood the issue.

/by the way the wall looks great, but again ingame it's going to suffer from source's bad lighting system.
-
tell me, how did you place those grass and plant models / sprites? did you make it by hand or did you change the detail.vbsp or something like this?
-
looks impressive
but I'm sure you could have done the pavilion thing in hammer as well. the lightmap doesn't work for models the same way as it works for brushwork, so the lighting looks a bit weird. also the physic model is never as accurate as brushwork (besides the fact that it must have been a pain in the ass to make the phys_model...)

bad screenshot
render it

gunman chronicles...
man, it's been a while
-
the theme park in redemption was awsome
does anybody remember the xeno project mods?
-
vehicle and tree models are great. have you made them by yourself?
the whole map looks a bit unrealistic though. I don't know, maybe it's the setting or the rough brushwork or the lighting. there's something I don't like about your map.

What would you mean by 'industry'?

game industry
being a pro

They Hunger was very cool. I wonder that Neil Manke isn't working for the industry yet, or is he?
-
I'd like to see some portfolio sites of guys who almost made it, or already made it into the game industry.
I know very few of them so far, so I would be glad if someone can give me some examples.
When I read stuff about the huge competition when you try to apply for a job in the industry, I just wonder where all these talented people are hidden?
I can't find lots of them on the internet. When I think of gamedesign communities with a larger amout of talented people, the only 2 sites that come to my mind are polycount and mapcore.
So please give me some portfolio or community sites where I can find examples of what I should reach to get good enough and maybe finally get a job in the industry.

uvm looks very well done
but your smoothgroups are still ugly.

hehe when I've played the fps mission the first time, the t-rex ate me. there was a hint after I died and it said something like "use the food chain"
so when i played it again i killed the flying dino with the spear and voila the t-rex ate it
ah by the way, why doesn't Jack Black (the camera guy) say anything? I hope the final game will have the original voice of him.
