  1. ja, I'd love to be in there, but it's more commitment than I can stomach. I don't even use IRC anymore and I hate having people pester me. Plus I work shifts, so I wouldn't be able to make half the tests. Bah.

  2. ooh, intersting thread.

I graduated from Uni with a somewhat crappy degree (yay for forgetting to print of the bibliography from my dissertation) about a year and a half ago. Been working as an IT Tech Support monkey for a TV compansy since Feb. Moneys a bit arse and I can't say I love the job, but they want to make me staff in the new year, so I must be doing something right.

Live with two other guys in Cardiff, which is a ton nicer than where I did live. Sadly, this means travelling to see most of my mates and though it's a shortish distance, it's still a pain in e the arse. Get on ok with housemantes, but don't really know them properly yet.

It's strange, I veer between being quite content because I've got a job, my own place, income yada blah and disconentment because I feel like maybe I should be doing more. Still, thats fairly normal for me, I get all sorts of ideas, but the motivation to do most stuff evades me. I've had this week off and have achieved utterly nothing but for watching a few DVDs. I intended to finish up all the stuff I'm working on for TS, go to the doctor about this ear infection (which I've ahad for 8 months) and get my CV updated. But here I sit. Might play some more Need For Speed later.

I think I'll probably do a bit more mod work once I'm done with TS, now I've got a fairly decent PC the possiblity is there and I wouldn't mind dabbling a bit. There was a time where being in the games industry was all I wanted, but bloody mindedness can only get you so far, there's a point where talent and/or overwhelming dedication is required to progress your skills and I simply cannot be arsed. Would much rather be down the pub you see. Ah well, c'eset la vie.

Women? Meh. The spectre of my sort of ex still hangs over me without any sign of resolving itself and I haven't met anyone I particularly like in bloody ages.

  3. Hi guys, I generally try and hack up my own textures for stuff, but my attempts at doing this one have failed miserably, so I'm asking if someone will do it as a favour.

What I'm trying to do is make a higher res version of this here texture :

    gratething.jpg

And then have an alternate one thats got a light mounted halfway along it. Ultimately, I'll have diff coloured lights in it, but thats something I can do easily enoguh myself. It's used quite extensively throughout the level and all my attempts have failed miserably. 64x256 would be good, it's for HL1, so no fancy stuff required. I'd really, really appreciate if someone could help me out with this.

    Many Thanks.

  4. Interesting thread.

One of the reasons I bought this monstrous PC I currently sit at was the thought of being able to map for source. I was so fed up by all the limits the HL engine imposed on me and longed for something that let my imagination run wild. I've tried a few times, but as has been mentioned many a time already, the workflow for getting anything in-game in source is fucking absurd. Even getting some extra textures in there is serious, serious hassle and it's just totally put me off TBH.

There were always a ton of completely ass mods in HL, equally, there were the interesting ones that got somewhere and were fun and different. With Source, about the only thing I really look forward too is Insurgency, because, as mentioned it's run by people with their heads screwed on properly. Dystopia appeals to me vaguely, but I've heard nowt about it since the initial release.

  5. The increasing move to 'big business' type structures in the games industry will make it harder to break into, but the industry is making way too much ccash for wanker like Jack thompson to put a dent in your prospects.

Complexity is, I supppose the main concern, it's taking more and more time and effort to create a stunning map/model and get hired, so I guess that the time you're gonna have to invest to get anywhere is gonig to increase as well.

  6. Depends on how you filter your news. If you don't really care about sports, you're not going to notice it, likewise entertainment news or whatever.

My main source is the beeb and on the front page they tend to carry major storys from each subsection on the front page. Tech news appears reguarly, but doesn't by any means dominate.

  7. Undersating, for me at least, was always way easier than learning things. Did a lot better in all the exams that relied on understanding rather than retaining facts and stats. Back in the days of my a-levels my grades varied wildly between as and es depending on how the exams were structured. Uni was a good deal easier in that respect and you can get away with blagging things a bit more and with comp sci it's a lot more based on practical work. Turning up blind drunk to some exams was probably not a good strategy though.

  8. The MP demo of FEAR has totally put me off it. The SP may be amazing, but the level design was bumk, the controls clunky and guns dissapointing. I might get Quake 4. Possibly. Pro Evo 5 is vvverrryy tempting though. I soddding love the PES series. COD2 tickled me a bit as well. Before any of that, I need a new mouse and to fix my car. Can't decide between logitech g5 & g7. hrmm
