  1. I'll check out reviews and forums to see how it'll play on my system first, but assuming it's all good I'll be buying it.
  2. That rockface level looks stunning. What texture set is that? Looks awesome. A rock texture that utilises the random texture tiling feature might work nicely, though it'd bump up your texture memory limitations a fair bit.

    gta4 soon

I love the GTA series, fantastic games. Rockstar seem to have a really nice knack for these things. There's always something to do, even if the mission you're stuck on is not too polished and a bit frustrating it's usually such a pleasure to fuck around that you don't care. I just hope my PC is up to. I'll go nucking futs if I have to wait six bloody months after it comes out on the 360.
  4. I did computer science, which was no picnic in places, but there was a lot of stuff I could breeze through and even with study I had loads of time to burn. The only exception to that was my dissertation, where I spent 3 weeks locked in a room with naught but caffeine and my PC. I blame the sleep deprivation for me forgetting the bibliography. But yes, some subjects certainly give you more time to dick around than others.
  5. I should have gotten upper second, but I turned up drunk to a number of exams and forgot to submit my bibliography with my dissertation. I was still only 3 marks off. My uni debt makes me shudder whenever I think about it, but it was good fun, so sod it. Never again in my life am I going to get money for nothing and such copious amounts of free time to waste.
  6. Interesting concept there, the design doc I roughed out for a mod that was never to be contained a similar sort of concept where points for kills are concerned, but it didn't affect anything else. I think using XP to dictate weapon choice is something of a risky decision, by all means do it, but I think it might be best used as an extra gameplay mode alongside straight DM/team stuff.
  7. My degree is barely worth the paper its printed on, but as a bit of life experience going to University is great IMO. Plus it gives you a LOT of spare time (even if you have a very active social life) which you can use to work on your portfolio or develop other skills (if you have the motivation to do so). I can't comment on the relevance or whatever of games programming/design courses, but a degree will certainly help your cause when applying for a job, it's another box they can tick and if it comes down to you and some other guy and your portfolios are equally strong then it may well be the deciding factor.
  8. damm, those Policia don't look too amused. Am thinking of going to Mexico for my holidays later this year as it happens. Photos are really nice. Whereabouts did you go there?
  9. and thus we have the reason why people are not allowed to drink and drive. should fit a brethalyser to my fucking pc.
  10. No mention of Vice City? Although Im not sure it counts as voice acting, the radio stations were always brilliant as well.
  11. Love, love, love this. The building etc are sublime, the others have said enough about lighting, so I won't bother. my one gripe is that sand, it does seem a tad too orange at present, especially with HDR. Maybe consider toning down teh saturation a teeny bit, darkening and putting some more yellow in? Also think you could definetly get more barrels, carts and stuff in there without it getting implausible. I dare say that a full on muddy, rainy, Deadwood look might work as well, but that would probably require a great deal of re-working.
  12. Depends on budget. SLI is a fucking waste. Dual core is awesome. Intel is top of the hill for the moment, but I personally feel that AMDs approach is better and their mid range is cheaper, so I side with them. Get a nice mid-range X2 and a 79xx or 8xx series card and it's job done. I'm leaving mine until the soccket 939 prices drop like a stone and I can get a 79 something. Then leave it for 18 months. Would stick with mine for longer, but lack of dual core is a pain at the moment.
  13. Wheel arches look a bit funny, I think you've arsed up your smoothing groups there a bit, you may aso want to consider making the inner walls as well.
  14. Agreed on most things. Looks great, I'd love to see it in DOD and that cellar is a bit too bright and clean.
  15. I got one with no trouble at all when I did my gap year there, might be as they usede to be in the commonwealth, or could be an EU thing, but its a lot easier to go there and work than it is with their paranoid neighbours to the south. Vancouvers nice as well, its got a hell of a lot going for it, hard to beat that setting.

    Linux

Because Ubuntu is still a bitch to use and most of GUI config stuff doesn't bloody work properly. After arsing around with config files for hours I realised that the Linux communitys idea of usability was somewhat different to my own. Linux is not in any way a proper desktop OS at present and until someone creates a decent distro that has a decent standardised method for adjusting settings, installing software and organising information, it won't be. It still very much feels like something designed by coders, not something designed for users. And for gods sakes just that in your bloody sig instead of singing every post.
  17. That'd be pretty cool. please do.
  18. You cant' just use meshes to fix yon cube syndrome. You need to actually build rooms. Put some angles in there, use more shapes. Think about the function of the room before building, don't just make a cube and fill it with stuff.
  19. Clerks is awesome. Gott a love Jay & Silen Bob. You seen all the others? Mallrats is the only one I've missed.
  20. Requiem For A Dream is fucking horrible. Yikes. Wathed it at the worst possible time. Awesome film, but so nasty. There is a very decent Welsh film about the First World War abouta bloke named Hedd Wyn. It's kind of incomprehensible, even with subs, because you have to know about Eisteddfods and all that shit, but still a good film, nominated fo an Oscar if brains serves.

    Linux

Lot of good points here. Linux is great for a number of things. From many points of view, it's better than Windows. Sadly, it has no support for wireless (the fact that is the fault fo the people who make the cars is of fuck all relavance to Joe Average). Secondly, it's command line tacular. In the distros I've looked at, if you want to do anything remotely interesting then it's config files ahoy. Fuck me, it's been around for years on end and there's still no standard for this shit, even within distros, yet alone cross distro. The selling point of Linux is customization, geek factor and security. Otherwise, there is no point in using it. I tried it 6 years ago and the things that bugged the fuck out of me then are still there when I tried it a few months ago. I played with 6 different distros, but none of them were adequate and did what I wanted. Linux is not a mainstream OS. Regardless of what many people think, they are mainstream. Linux has and most likely always be a niche. Sad, because XGL is lovely to look at and the OS itself has many good ideas, but you're not gonna do shit while Gates has a chokehold and Windows runs everything desktopy.
  22. Nope, no M16 I'm afraid. Could make one, can defintely get permission to use a high quality one that someone else has made. I've just had the idea of setting it in some alternate HL2 future where the war is still going about 10 years in the future and the rebels have got themselves a bit more organised - so they've got slightly better weapons and maybe combine style armour. Could make for quite interesting scenarios IMO. Combine sniper rifle also doable. All of this needs a coder though, not that any of it would be particularly complex (from what little I know).
  23. Sounds cool. The fighting your way back to your unit thing sounds fun as well, plenty of potential to inject variety there. I've got a pretty large back catalogue of weapon models that could be used if there's a need for them

    Linux

Had a tinker. Managed to do most things that I wanted with it, but it hates wireless, so was pretty much of no use to me.
  25. I've never actually read a games industry job description where I've actually thought 'Blimey, I could do that'. I might have to get my arse in gear and apply for this. IT support is, after all, a mugs game. Edit : they did the console versions of Nightfire, the PC one was made by a different developer.
