Campaignjunkie got a reaction from Alf-Life in "From Earth" is a single player Source mod with its sh*t together... TF2 / CS:GO mappers who want to try SP design should work on it
hey, just want to shill for someone else's HL2 mod called "From Earth" -- it's a first person Mirror's Edge parkour-ish mod, with a crafting-puzzle system and a sci-fi narrative. it's not far from AAA tendencies, but it's also pretty fresh, which I think is where a lot of Mapcorians want to be.

now: they need env artists / level designers, and I think especially TF2 / CS:GO designers who want to dip their toes into single player design should really jump onto this -- this team knows what they're doing.

they're a really great team that is strong in coding, character modeling, and animation... those are traditionally the hardest roles to recruit for, and they already have that stuff locked down. this is also a team that knows what they're doing -- they've finished 2 pretty big single player mods with new code / mechanics (Human Error / Water)

they are also doing everything right -- they have a bunch of core gameplay implemented and prototyped, and they're iterating in the right places. the thing already feels pretty solid.

this is a mod project that will almost definitely get finished, and they won't waste your time, and you'll end up making some great work.

(I would totally help out if I had time, but I don't... but at the same time, I don't want this opportunity to get wasted, so I'm vouching for them in this awkward way.)

When the straight white men of MapCore unite to talk about how sexism / homophobia / racism isn't real and isn't worth talking about, especially in the game industry, you're all sending a message to other MapCore community members -- don't post, don't participate, your feelings aren't valid.

I think that's okay in EOT because that's the special space for it; I avoid EOT and I'm fine with it.

But if you do it out here, in public, keep in mind that people are going to see this, and you're making someone like me feel less welcome here. What, so I'm going to have to start avoiding the "Gaming Discussion" forums too? I wonder how the women of MapCore feel?

I'm not saying "censor" your sexist opinions; feel as sexist as you want. But just know that there's a chilling effect on others you're intimidating with that attitude. A consequence. And really, you end up looking tactless.

Don't worry, no one is going to speak-up and complain because they feel intimidated. They'll just leave.

It's not my job to convince you that you're possibly intimidating women by saying "this woman talking about representation of women in games has nothing of value to say and she's a crook and she's wrong and she's a hack" -- intellectualism can come off as sexist too.

So, okay, I'm just going to stop visiting Gaming Discussion. Sorry to bother you.

You'd have to re-write them. Mainly because those articles (I flipped through them) are solely about your level, and I haven't played your level, so I don't care about reading them?

Go back to your essay writing lessons in school. You need to have a main argument that you develop and support. What's interesting about your work or design thinking?

I think one possible format for this kind of article would be:
    1) State general design idea / design structure that you'll talk about
    2) Talk about 2-3 examples of that idea in other games, where that idea came from, pros / cons, BE SPECIFIC
    3) Talk about your own implementation, explain it, compare to examples, assess, BE SPECIFIC
    4) How do you know it worked / connect to general idea, BE SPECIFIC
    5) Now, add further insight onto your original general idea and suggest future directions

    example:
    1) "There are many games that use level design to induce fear in the player. What is the architecture of fear?"
    2) "Amnesia uses rooms with narrow hallways and dim, floor-height lighting in its second chapter... Half-Life 2 uses a stairwell that makes you turn right 4 times, then puts a headcrab at the top, designed to scare you when you turn left..." etc.
    3) "In my map Gangster House, I combined narrow hallways with repetition of turns. In this room pictured below, I..."
    4) "I think it worked because players often lost 5-10 health and ran into the barnacle. But is this fear, or is this surprise?"
    5) "Maybe the architecture of fear is more about breaking a functional pattern unexpectedly, rather than just making something "look" scary according to what's traditionally scary in our culture norms? Or maybe there's another type of scariness possible in level design, one that's foreshadowed and unsurprising?"

one test of your writing: would my father / mother / bf / gf / friend, whoever has little interest or experience in games, be able to understand roughly the general idea I'm trying to get across?

    - invest in a domain name

    - I look at your nexuiz levels and think, "okay blocky arena thing" -- you have all these additional buttons and JS animations that are unnecessary... just do something simple and straightforward like this: http://magnarj.net/ the work should speak for itself

    - no one's arguing you have to be a great environment artist, but I think you do have to be a decent one, or know how to arrange props in a pleasing way, if only just to sell your map concepts further than "blocky arena thing" or "random low LoD farcry3 props arranged on a flat terrain"... I don't know if these play well or not, but I look at these screenshots and I don't care about finding out if they play well

the fact of the matter is that they just don't look professional, and an employer would have to invest a lot of resources in training and educating you when you should be training yourself with mods and personal projects anyway... think about who you're competing against

    - anyway: don't give up, make more levels, the only way to get better is to keep working and practicing

    Yep.

Sentura, I'm not sure why I'm bothering, but... they've gone to great lengths to avoid the prisoner's dilemma. The only resource to collect, "cloth," is unlimited and you spend it regularly to boost jump. There's no dilemma over resources. It's just whether you and a person get along, and whether you trust them enough to stay with them -- e.g. they start shouting a lot but you're thinking "no the level exit is over here" and walk away / disconnect, when really they just wanted to show you a cool level secret and you didn't trust them.

But at the same time, there's no penalty for disconnecting. You just walk off and jump away and you'll never see them again. No punishment.

I saw a presentation they gave at NYU. They wanted to make a co-op game and went the traditional route at first (e.g. 2 people to open a gate!) and did lots of prototypes, but it all ended up being stuff that had been done before... Plus, if a game forces you to cooperate, how can that cooperation be meaningful? Here's a game that actually says, think about your relationship to another person and whether it's worth it to stay with them.

It takes major balls to rip co-op mechanics out of a co-op game. From what I've seen demo'd, it works really well. And the tech on offer is amazing -- seamless multiplayer, the sand... it's brilliant.

You can totally gun your way through / fall back to a doorway and wait for the AI to walk into your gunfire. The game will insult you for this play-style, but it'll let you beat the game that way, because why not?
