  1. I played the original Thief long long ago, but it was a weird pirated version with all the NPC sounds removed... except the Haunt sounds. So I was like, "whoa, NPCs make sounds?!" and was freaking out from all the chains rattling and couldn't take more than 10 steps into the Cathedral before quitting. This time I won't be afraid though!
  2. Thief: Gold -- currently at the Bonehoard. I haaaate zombies. Atom Zombie Smasher Machinarium -- can't figure out this puzzle with the red wrenches at the bottom of the well (?) Deus Ex -- have to blow up the super tanker, I forget what difficulty I set it at but I am getting my ass kicked all the time
  3. System Shock 2 and Thief 1 and 2 store their textures in .PCX format (ugh) in .CRF files, which you can just rename to .ZIP... Thief 1, for example, put everything in "\res\fam.crf" EDIT: Oh, didn't see that you wanted to study current gen textures, haha... I guess the 64x64 16 color bitmaps won't really help you that much.
  4. The body column is soooo wide that it's really affecting readability. Half that width for text columns would be ideal, I think.
  5. Great env work. I really like the pylon props on the train platform. Good luck with the release!
  6. PogoP: wait, is that rock in the front -- a smoking meteor? Because, um, when a meteor impacts Earth's surface, even if it's a small one, it doesn't land neatly in a grassy field. It does this:
  7. It's like Deus Ex.
  8. Well I use this thread to run ideas past you guys too... Gotta make sure I'm not completely full of bullshit.
  9. Another school project; it's part of a Source mod that talks about game design. This one is about how games can make arguments and take on rhetoric / theory and make it accessible to players. I'm sure most of you will remember what was behind this door... Well in my homage to System Shock 2, this time the big reveal will be this god awful TED talk about "gamification" instead of . I think I'm going to have a sound designer distort his voice to make it all crazy. It'll be funny. But the level's also talking about what the level itself is doing -- for example, this homage helps the audience come to my side, like me saying "I'm a hardcore gamer too, I like SS2 too. Now watch this idiot talk." This is similar to a typical rhetorical gesture where, say, Obama talks in Indonesian slang at a speech in Indonesia to say, "hey I'm one of you." Figuring out how to build the room and do the same stuff as in SS2 is proving to be fun / tricky. (using a modded version of PhilipK's PK02 set) (yeah, the specular on the door is wacky)
  10. I buy all my games on Steam. USD pricing + great sales + no sales tax + downloadable delivery + no DVDs to keep track of + some indie stuff that never makes it to retail. But the real issue here, I think, is Steamworks. There's no other real middleware solution for everything it does -- GFWL is 100 times worse and, ugh, does anyone remember the utter shit that was Gamespy Arcade? Punkbuster is kind of iffy too. Ubisoft's always-internet DRM is crazy. I think Impulse had something like "Goo" or something? Is anyone using that?
  11. The problem is hardware interface. We need a more accessible control scheme for FPS games; mouse and keyboard are too difficult to pick-up. The dual analog sticks are slightly better, but I still see beginners really struggle with it. Almost every other game genre is easier to pick-up, I feel like.
  12. Great colors. I don't like how 90 degree / straight-edged the bricks and blocks are, though. They're kind of jarring when compared to the cool obelisks and tombs you have going.
  13. But what about Minecraft? It's the biggest shakeup of the FPS in a long time.
  14. Oh fuck yeah man! Have you played Shadows of the metal age? http://www.thief2x.com/media/screenshots/ Personally I thought it was only okay (for all the work put into it) when I played it a few years ago... for me the standouts will always be Ominous Bequest, the Seventh Crystal, the one where you fight Keepers, and anything Purah's ever touched
  15. It doesn't matter who does things first -- it only matters who does things the best. That said -- I think Ken is right. PC is a democratic platform. No publisher would ever green-light the Super Columbine game because it's not marketable and it's so controversial (and it's really poorly designed to boot / it's sooo ugly) -- but do you agree that people should be allowed to make controversial things, and distribute them freely, even if they suck? That's PC. No dev-kit, no license, no cert, no demands -- just games. And those games are so much cheaper too...
  16. I know it's not an accurate comparison because lots of people bought retail versions of Crysis, but: I have 31 Steam friends who have Ep2 (and if it's not installed, it's 1 click and only a 5 minute wait since they already have most of the Source assets for other games) in comparison, 3 Steam friends with Crysis... and 2 of those 3 have a Steam all-access pass thing and own 900 games so they don't really count. Who's going to dig out the DVDs vs. clicking a button in Steam? ... not to diminish your achievement though, this looks great and I enjoyed reading the article as well.
  17. If I finish my mod in the next week (kinda unlikely) and get in the finals of the IGF student compo (rather unlikely) then yeah, I'll be there!
  18. Well there's certainly no point in shameful monetization.
  19. Make something for HL2 Ep2 next time! No one has Crysis installed
  20. Single player HL2Ep2. Murder a VIP -- then mop up all the witnesses. In the process of mopping-up, you'll probably create more witnesses. Red lines connect witnesses to the murder they witnessed. Don't let any escape, don't kill so many that you can't manage the clean-up. No Russian + a wall hack, in an arch-viz museum, with a noir narrative about being a lesbian and being betrayed. 1) Is it too dark on peoples' monitors? 2) Does it feel "noir"? If not, what can I do? (I specifically wanted to avoid the typical black and white noir look, I like color)
  21. Please excuse me being an asshole here, you say you're "still adding stuff" etc. but I'm going to be blunt because I think you'll benefit from it: Design-wise, I think you should simplify your site design a lot more. The two best portfolio's I've seen are insta's (
  22. Err, uh, what's the goal of your portfolio here? To land a job? If so, I don't get the point of "modular BSP" -- you're not modeling any real detail and you didn't make the textures... So you want to be a UI designer?... Or write PDFs of games but not actually make them? I'm just not sure if I'm getting it, here...
  23. Are there robust pre-made freely available FPS frameworks anyone can use out there? Because if so, I might start doing some Unity stuff...
  24. I agree about L4D, but how is TF2 not complex? I've watched some competitive TF2 and it just boggles the mind.
