    I think it's featured plenty, but usually as hero pieces because all those ornaments and freezes are time consuming to make . even scifi games have tons of it. gears of war is like 100% neoclassical stuff with scifi elements tacked on. Starcraft uses it too:

    Yeah, that's not good at all.

    And that's not something you want to deal with when you want to do good level design, you can't make a doom game this way . You want something thats fast and easy to work with, that you can iterate with and doesn't give you a lot of restrictions. RAGE engine was good for artists i guess, but restrictive for everything else

    carmack really missed the mark with the RAGE engine, it's interesting tech but it's not that great for making games. You get static worlds and small levels with a massive memory footprint, all for being able to paint every pixel uniquely, which isn't really that important for creating a game.

    i assume that one goes with a normal map. I would lower the contrast a lot, let the normal map do the work . You don't need AO that dark!

    Fallout 3 intro was fantastic, I loved how you had to play through growing up from a baby inside the vault

    really? I felt like I was just watching a badly acted b-movie. Everything was scripted out for you, even the camera movement.. it didn't use any of the unique interactive storytelling you can do with games as a medium. Just a first person movie (a bad one)

    Half-life intro was also fully scripted of course, but you got to look at things and explore at your own pace. Incredibly memorable

    Let's hope it's not cancelled, but renamed. It really has nothing to do with the original prey, and it's not really that strong of a franchise that you can use that title for marketing reasons .

    I felt I might just as well make seperate topic for this instead of posting in the WIP level thread.

    So for those who havn't seen it yet, I'm working on a simple first person shooter with a procedural level generator, here's a few screenshots of what kind of level geometry it generates right now:




    Right now I'm pretty happy with how the generation works, even though there are still a loooooot of things I want to do with it. The pie in the sky goal I have for it is to make it generate truly unique levels, every time.

    I also started creating my first enemies for it. Right now they are still incredibly stupid and will shoot at whatever shoots at them and just run around bumping into walls.




    try it out and let me know what you think. Any ideas are welcome!
