Bought it last week, had time to play it a bit more today. Jesus they really improved the storytelling and all. Feels much better than AC2 and AC2 was awesome.

I don't think so because Gearbox started working on Duke just last year...
They might already have had a deal in place at that point. The Duke Begins project could have been something they started with Take2, but my guess is that it got merged with Duke Forever once that blew up in 3D Realms' hands.
I don't know really. Triptych Games worked on Duke after 3D Realms exploded, Gearbox snagged the IP just last year.

I don't think finishing Mafia 1 is that much necessity but definitely adds a bit background to what happens there and there. There are few crossover plot points regarding Mafia 1 happenings.

Finished it yesterday and I enjoyed it very much. Loved the
Mafia 1 cross-scene during the final missions of the game
and overall the missions were really varied. Too bad about the autosave/checkpoint thing. I ragequit few times during some of the missions when you were threw back to the start.
