1. You need some non-Crytek guys!
2. I don't know why you guys are so eager to dismiss these numbers. Every report for years has shown an aging "gamer" demographic that is broadening far beyond the hardcore club it used to be. Since you guys are tossing out anecdotes of not knowing anyone older, let me offset that. We've rolled a lot of the Warhawk community into our fan base for Starhawk, and have on two occassions brought in one of our dedicated Warhawk fans for a studio tour and a first look at the game. Both brought their 13ish-year-old sons, who they have played Warhawk with for years. Both probably in their mid-30s. Most of my studio is older than me, and I'm 28. I was introduced to games in 91/92 or so by my grandpa, who was in his early 60s at the time. I see more and more parents playing with their kids now, or being involved in some form, which is such a far cry from the days of parents just buying whatever the hell their kids wanted and then complaining to the media when it was more intense than their pre-conceived notions of Pac-Man let on. People play games. That's a good thing.
3. I swear by the Dell Ultrasharp line. I'm currently using a 2407WFP (though it was destroyed by my 12+ hour days during NS2 so I have some muddy Hammer burn-in) and a 2209WA... I also have dual U2410s at work and I'm currently planning to replace both my monitors here with the U2311 when it's convenient - I'm ready to have the same resolution on both monitors again Going from 16:10 to 16:9 will be a bit of an adjustment, but I can't justify paying twice the money for 2 24s when I'm short on desk space and they're mostly the same anyway. Quick anecdote of Ultrasharp monitor quality - my first 2 Dell monitors were 2001FPs, and at the same time my wife had a non-Ultrasharp 19" LCD that looked like a dim muddy mess in comparison. When I put the 2407 next to the 2001, the 2001 looked like that crappy little 19. When I got the 2209, the 2407 looked like the crappy 19. I think you'll be pleased. Edit: Also, I've been following the 2311 price for a while - they've had it on sale about 3 different times now, but I missed it each time. Just refresh the page daily and I'm sure you can get the lower price again soon
4. I can agree with that, but it'd have to be subtle. Maybe create the lines using negative space by adding a very slight shading to the inner faces?
5. I'd like to see the text brought up to the right side of the cube... maybe even match the slant of the cube on the leading edge of the M to bring them together? I like this direction, though. Gogo community effort \m/
6. I think you could get away with it if it were much more subtle. Right now it looks like a really simple block extruding out (and is). If you made it more shallow and gave it a bit of a bevel on the edge, it might blend in a bit better.
7. ...I don't know what on earth you're talking about... (thanks)
8. Yeah, I'm glad you guys were able to get that test rolling. As long as the challenge involves a single game, I think we can work towards that goal. Multi-game challenges are of course a bit trickier, but it'd be good if we could make that happen, too. So, I think the collaboration idea is great, but as a separate Challenge, not tied to Portal 2 - I think that's best suited for mostly standard content, but I still like the idea of a custom MapCore cube or something similar. For collaboration, we could do a specific design + scripting or design + art challenge, or just open it up for two people to put forth whatever collaboration they feel like (maybe with a set theme?) - I think this could be a really fun one. Do people still want to roll the Portal 2 pack, or should we move on to our other options?
9. My apologies for the slow posting, guys, things have been swamped both at work and at home lately. Here are the top three entries by votes from the Nightwatch DM Challenge! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST PLACE: NOCTURNAL by Campaignjunkie STACK by Erratic I WISH I HAD A JOB by Zyndrome As always, if you haven't seen the rest of the entries, check them out in the voting thread: viewtopic.php?f=57&t=16360&start=45 Five entries isn't too bad for having about 24 hours notice and 72 hours total. If you enjoyed this short-term challenge or have any feedback on how it was run, as well as any ideas for the next big one, drop by the Challenge discussion thread: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=16082&start=75#p297196 We'll be rolling a new full Challenge soon!
10. My mistake! I saw "ready for public releases" and thought it was a mis-post. I'll put it back if you like, just let me know
11. Moved to Work Release for you. Also, I mentioned this on Twitter (I just now made the connection to your username here ) - well done! I still love how the train track cuts through the level. Very impressive for how little time you had.
12. Glad you guys had fun! CJ/SamCom, any more info on running a US/NA test later tonight?
13. ^ Ok, European members (and US peeps who feel like joining), here you go. Can you PM me a server IP a little bit before you start?
14. Also a good idea! When do you want to run it?
15. Let's try it. Who's hosting?
16. Pick a time and a server and I'll publicize it on the Twitter account. Would be fun!
17. Hey guys, sorry for the delay in getting this posted. As mentioned in the other thread I ended up not feeling too well last night and ended up sleeping until about noon. As this is the first time we've tried a weekend challenge, I'm interested in your feedback - please give a post over in the general discussion thread if you'd like to see more of these or have any ideas how to improve them in the future. So! Here are the five entries we pulled for the Nightwatch DM challenge. As with previous votes, you may choose up to three entries for your vote. Results will be posted on Friday! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GAME OF CRATES by Puddy - DOWNLOAD nwdm_stack_1.jpgnwdm_sector2_1.jpgnwdm_nocturnal _1.jpgnwdm_iwihaj_1.jpg
18. Great entries, guys. Sorry for the lack of a proper submission thread; I was a bit occupied most of today (with, uh, this). This thread is fine. I'm also suddenly feeling really under the weather and decided it's best I go to bed early tonight - if anyone else has a submission, go ahead and post here, and I'll put it all together in the morning.
19. One more bonus for you guys, I found a light setting for the nwdusk sky: Brightness: 247 186 149 18 Angle: 244 I'm digging to see if I can find the other ones - I'll post those if I can, but you're of course welcome to create your own as well
20. As an added bonus: Our skies! http://www.gamefront.com/files/20504288/nw_skies.rar I unfortunately don't have light settings immediately handy for these If I can dig any up, I'll post them.
21. No, most textures should be used at 1:1 scale. You'll see a lot of the tall walls have 160 unit tall wall sections with 96 unit tall metalish panel sections on top of them - that was to keep the textures power-of-two, but make sure we didn't make textures that were TOO ridiculously out of scale.
22. Oh CJ, you so silly. In other news. START YOUR EDITORS THE CHALLENGE IS GO. See you Sunday!
23. I'm working on getting the most recent versions of all of them that I can to release publicly like the textures. I'm shocked how much traffic the texture release blog posts gets, so there's definitely some interest out there.
24. viewtopic.php?f=57&t=16348 all right, let's see how this goes. Let's aim for starting the next big challenge on the 9th or the 16th. Is that far enough back to put Portal 2 on the table? Or should we just narrow it down from the current list of suggestions?
25. We're just going to do this and see what happens. Welcome to the first MapCore WEEKEND CHALLENGE. Your mission: Build a Half-Life 1 deathmatch level using the Nightwatch textures in 72 hours. This is deliberately fast and on short notice to see what sort of participation we can get. The great thing about short-term challenges like this is we don't really need big participation to have fun, and it won't eat weeks of your time. If this goes well or garners enough interest, we'll do more in the future! Now, your rules! You can download the Nightwatch textures here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/15027791 ... tures.rar/ If you care to go outside, the Nightwatch skies are available here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/20504288/nw_skies.rar And here's some theme reference:
