  1. [Homeworld soundtrack]

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are both products of Vivendi Universal Games. Any publication/use of music from those games must be with permission from the VUG legal department. Sorry, can't help ya on this one.

However, my cousin made a couple of short movies in film school using both HW and Half-Life music, and he got in touch with VUG legal and they allowed him to use a song or two. The catch was that it was for educational use only and not for a commercial release.

For this context, I am not sure how VUG would feel about releasing an entire soundtrack.

    [/Homeworld soundtrack]

I imagined that was probably the case :( Maybe I can just find a copy of the old GOTY edition with the soundtrack CD somewhere :)

In other news, yesterday was the greatest day ever. I found these, thanks to a nudge by a friend:

Beyond Good and Evil. 31 Mp3s. 172 megs. Awwwww yeah. *does a little dance*

  2. What about DM_NATURAL-SELECTIONTEXTURES

    Shader Lab :P

Relic25 had already been using the Majestic set from SL in his Nostromo map before converting it into Bast. That's how those textures got there, but Charlie always was trying to discourage people from using them due to their outside origins. Made the NS texture set deal a lot more complicated than it should have been :P

As I mentioned already, I like the looks of it. :) Eager to see how it turns out.

  3. aren't the 2001FP's like $800? ( A PIECE)

Normal price, yes, but they go on sale every week for up to a couple hundred bucks off. They drop down as low as $600 or so.

You were the one looking to spend money, so there's a great way to spend a lot of money. :)

  4. Screw the 6800gt, just shell out for one of the ultras. :)

    Also, Dell 2001FP 20.1" monitor(s) = a must.

I'm planning on splurging on a 6800 ultra and 2 2001FPs, this summer, possibly an Aeron chair as well... the 'smaller' monitors mean I could finally move to my better desk and I doubt this easy chair would work well there :P

I'm quite happy with my Dell Inspiron notebook... got it about a year ago and it quite handily can run 1024x768 UT2K4 and Halo quite solidly. Actually used it at a LAN once since I was too lazy to drag my system and one of the hulking 20" monitors to go with it :)

I also have a few-years old set of ProMedia 5.1s. I got the kinda faulty batch at first but got them replaced without too much hassle and aside of that have had fantastic use of them for almost 3 years. Definitely would recommend their equipment . :)

  5. I posted this on the Natural Selection forums a couple days ago, so some of you may have seen it, but I know there's a few of you here who enjoy a good game soundtrack now and then... Thought it worthy of a re-post here :)

So particularly with the inclusion of soundtrack CDs for Half-Life 2 and Dawn of War being made available with orders and pre-orders, I've started actively searching more soundtracks where I can find them. Turns out there's actually quite a few available online.

Blizzard made available a huge selection of tracks from Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction over time a couple years ago. Many are available in one large pack, with a bunch more as single downloads. I kept up to date with these as they were originally released, but still have to go about grabbing them again. Most can be found here, with additional MP3s in the specific Bonus and Lord of Destruction sets.

More recently I've discovered a series of game soundtracks for free download on sites such as Fileplanet and FileShack (and I'm guessing you could find plenty of mirrors elsewhere, as these are official releases). Among these are:

    Deus Ex 2:

    Chronicles of Riddick:

    Men of Valor:

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System: (this is a fun one, check out the stereo intro to Rat Race in particular)

    Myth III:

    Children of the Nile:

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=6010

Some mods are even included - Red Orchestra:

This doesn't technically count, but don't miss the punkish cover of the Katamari Damacy theme song by TX-based Corey vs. Corey:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/147319.shtml

I've also been tracking down some other games with actual CD soundtracks... Freedom Fighters has one I've been meaning to get for a while, and apparently there is a Homeworld soundtrack CD available with the game of the year edition of that game. Curse me and my getting it early... (Izuno, maybe with your THQ and thus Relic connection, you could lend a hand? ;) )

Then there are the games that should have soundtracks released, but don't... Like Beyond Good and Evil. *crie*

  6. you ever going to show us more?

You know, I do have a full-time and then some job, a wife, and a huge stack of unfinished games. ;)

I did play with it a little more last night. Tried some UV stuff, but oh lordy did it fail miserably. :) Might be a while before I have an update on how things are going.

  7. Heh, DD was right when he said you Gearbox guys loved Quake 3. :)

Q3 is hands down my favorite (*cough*released*cough*) MP game. The speed, the mayhem, the fun... everything DM should be. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first 2 Quakes in MP and the UT series is top-notch, but Q3 is the one I always find myself going back to even after all the years.

I wish looking back I'd jumped into the mapping community for that... So much crazy abstract off-the-wall design, not to mention the fluidity of the good stuff.

  8. Remember, this is all practice. :) I'm starting off low poly so I can get a solid base set of skills and build from there while making sure I'm doing it right. Next up is Empire State and Chrysler, and then another set with the Sears Tower, TransAmerica Pyramid, and Library Tower (which, even at low poly, will probably be the most difficult to construct).

OL: there is a slight indent on the bottom. Had to kinda guess, though, didn't find any good pictures of the base of the tower. :(

  9. They're states, not continents. :)

    96%, 5 mi average error, 278 secs.

I put delaware about 31 miles south and one of the other states my mouse jerked right when I clicked - I kid you not. Sad. :(

Edit: ooh, gotta try advanced. That one stays difficult by only showing 1 state at a time. :)

    Europe Intermediate:

34/44, 183 mi. average error (damned little ones killed me :(), 77%, 370 sec

  10. So I'm working my way up the lines of modeling, with eventual goals to do some high poly work. In the meantime, I'm starting a series of low-poly skyscraper models as a chance to practice my basic techniques. Eventually I'll bump these up to high poly as well, but for now it's very simple stuff.

First was the Bank of China tower in Hong Kong. It's a really simple shape and should be excellent exercise for both modeling and UV work. Model is 68 polygons, 135 tris. Built in Lightwave 7.5.

    The building:

    central_bank_of_china.jpg

    The model:

    bankofchina_1.jpg

    bankofchina_3.jpg

    bankofchina_4.jpg

  11. don't forget that you get an kickass mouse with it.

no batteries, no optic crap and no ball. Just some kinda "fiber" stuff D:

But it's weird to use because the motion is always registered relative to the tablet, not the mouse direction :)

That still throws me off. But then, I haven't had much time to practice with it yet. :(

  12. omg that was fucking hilarious, they had kelly clarkson, some country singer and ashlee simpson and they fucked up the sound SO badly. it couldnt be any more obvious.

College football halftimes shouldn't be this lame choreographed shit. College bands are about as much a part of a gameday experience as the games themselves. And OU and USC have two of the top-tier programs in the country, no less. No wonder the crowd was pissed. :P

  13. both shots look like something u could almost make in hl1.

Yes, but it's also a knee-jerk reaction map, and for that it's quite good. :) All it would take, though, is a normal map on that rock texture, a second light (which would bring the grand total to 3, it looks like, perfectly reasonable), and the smoothing tweaks I mentioned earlier and it'd be some top-notch stuff.

I really wish people would stop these knee-jerk maps. Yeah, people are sorely underestimating D3 (same thing happened with Quake, really, it'll take the licensees down the road to show what's really possible), but making a quick map in a big empty box doesn't solve anything. This is closer than most to making a point, but as mentioned in the above paragraph, still falls short of what it needs to really sell it.

Oh and KFS i still havent seen any happy maps for d3 yet, like a tropical island or a jungle or a nature map, and i dont wanna search so can you post some :?

Of course you haven't - there aren't any yet. The content creation time and complexity has gone through the roof on this stuff, and on top of that there's enough people disappointed with Doom3 itself that what people are doing work for it are still trying to get their heads around it. Is it possible to make one? Hell yes! But the content work required is well beyond what most people in the amateur community have time and/or ability for. Give it time. :)

  14. Doesnt look very good. I can tell its doom3, which isnt a compliment. I hate the darkness D:

Oh, god forbid he maybe wanted to make it an evening-ish scene. :P It could be blindingly bright if he wanted it to be.

That first shot looks really bad, but the second looks really good. If you were getting up close to that, you'd want to add some more poly detail and texture blending, but for background scenery or something it'd be gorgeous. UV coverage looks pretty good, even just a higher-res texture and scaling up the UVs themselves would help a lot.

Doesn't even look like it's a normal mapped texture. I imagine this would be absolutely beautiful with a normal map and some improved smoothing.

  15. Hmm. I wonder if this might be the result of some of the files being created from a different version of Hammer? (i.e. 3.3 vs. 3.5 or something?)

That's odd, though, if they all do that. I've had some problems with some of my maps not loading in 4, but some load fine. If you have a leftover copy of 3.5 or another older version, maybe try loading them there, saving out, and loading again in 4.0?

    I'm at a loss otherwise. :(
