  1. omg yes i love this idea
  2. Simply put, for those of you that did buy Half Life 2, how did you buy it? There has been talk of this informally, and Ol did have a poll on how people intended to buy it, but now that the game has been out a couple weeks it would be nice to see how people actually bought it. There are some people I work with (some senior people, in fact) that cannot believe that anyone would buy games from something like Steam. So I just sigh and post a Mapcore poll. Thanks for your input.
  3. I miss snow. We got great snow in mountains, but nothing like that here...just "cool" weather and some gray skies.
  4. MSN really. it's just a decent general news site with top headlines in easy to get to place. there are far far better sites, but i'm lazy.
  5. I second that. To expand on FakeDawg's point about examing the engine, I suggest playing HL2 from start to finish at least a couple times to examine the architecture, level of detail, entities in action etc. Also play CS:S to examine how they ported the CS maps into the new engine. Once original Source MP maps come out for CS and eventually DoD:S and other mods, examine them too. The more you study other peoples works, the more you understand what it takes to be original. We love original ideas around here. Good luck and have fun.
  6. indeed your first map will suck..and second, third etc. but you will get better if you keep at it. more than anything, as you learn to map, getting feedback from people does help. learn to take criticism as feedback. most of all, have a good attidute a don't be affraid to experiment. you will learn more by reading tutiroals and doing trial&error than by doing anything else.

    Nintendo DS

we have a few at the office. it sure is big. i like my GBA SP cause it's sleek. if they keep making great GBA games, I'll keep playing the GBA and prob won't ever get a DS unless i manage a DS game at some point.

    MGS 3

i doubt i'll get to it. i mostly manager shooter/action stuff...not stealth...and i barely have enough time. i would very much like to know what people around here think of it. right now i got HL2, Halo2 in the hopper...with GTA:SA and a few others waiting...LotR:BfME...um...BiA later...too many games...stop....coming at me....
  9. funny, people compain that WW2 has been done to death in games. but the reality is we haven't even come close to the potential of WW2 drama in video games yet. i'm not saying you have to like BiA or anthying, your opinion is just as valid. but give Gearbox some credit for trying to do something new in WW2 gaming, even it is still fundamentally a shooter. personally i'm very glad they are trying to evolve the shooter (ww2 shooter esp) genre this way. yes cinematic dialog in the trailer...i'm sure the writer is a tool.
  10. Well it is very clear what Gearbox is going for, and how Ubi is trying to position it. I think it cleary stands apart from MoH, CoD, and BF 1942. Can't wait to play it.
  11. the plot thickens... http://biz.gamedaily.com/features.asp?article_id=8357
  12. i'd have a massive mapcore party...start off at Tahoe for snowboarding and partying with skibunnies...then head down to vegas.. maybe New Zealand....though I still need to make the pilgrimage to Normandy.
  13. well....actually, it is possible.

    Half-Life 2

the thing about Dog is that it feels like an actual character...as does Alyx of course. When we first meet Dog you really see how attached Alex is to him (er...it). It's refreshing to know that video games are evolving where we're the characters are more and more life like. Also...It's great how there is an obvious back story, but they don't dwell too much on explaining it and let you experience it as you go through, revealing what they need to bit by bit.

    Half-Life 2

technial issues galore... first teh specs here at home: Athon 64 3400+ nvidia 6800ultra 1 gig ram WinXP SP1 updated drivers The game plays...then it freezes, the audio skips...and then it unfreezes...then freezes again...then unfreezes...i got as far as where Barney reveals himself like 2 minutes into the game...but it's unplayable Anyone else having this issues? I'll try it at my office machine tomorrow and report back in. thanks
  17. ah man the old school....i was so naive back then...
  18. quick update you may have already seen, but this issue made the GameDaily again this morning: http://biz.gamedaily.com/features.asp?article_id=8323
  19. plz...SA forums? We have a unique community here focused on game design. don't lose the focus. especially not now. i can't believe this idea was even suggested, but then again, it shouldn't be a shock.

so far the 6800ultra hasn't had any problems rendering Doom3, FarCry, CS:S at 1280x1024 at max (or nearly max) settings. Mine only supports digital output, but u can use an analog screen fine with a converter. my office machine is a 6800gt and that has also had no problems and there is really no performance difference that I can detect in game. i used to have a 9800pro in the same machine before the gt, and the upgrade made a big difference in Doom3 at least
  21. excellent work. if you want a job, there is probably one for you somewhere. Uber max skillz always in demand, in gaming or even other industries. Keep up the good work.
  22. I loved SSX 3...my favorite extreme sports game of all time....though EA Big did it. well i didn't love Battlefield, but i def liked it. That makes me think, any inhouse developed non sports game from EA internal studios (outside BIG) that people really liked? They must have put out something that was good....right?
  23. hookers. that or free games (i play shooters as part of my research) my boss often takes out our groups to movies on fridays....though like once a quarter and hit has to be a kick ass movie. we get a holiday party each year...um........we have a softball team in a local league plus other sports. we also play game on the lan after 5, though usually means at 6 we all go back to work for a while. in crunch time we'll often order in pizza and work real late.
  24. I've worked with, or currently work with, three of our major internal studios that we own: Volition, Rainbow and Relic. They all work hard and put in overtime during a crunch period, but I've never heard anything like that story about 85 hour weeks at EA over and over and over through the life of a project with no comp time. That's kinda scary that it's like that.
  25. i opened an existing HL1 .rmf in Hammer 3.5, exported it to a .map, then opened the .map in Hammer 4.0 and that worked just fine. Of course none of the textures carried over.
