Again, what I'm saying is that if you wanna think about it like that, then HL2 is quake 1 on drugs. there is still a lot of quake code in there, just ask a programmer who might have peeked at the leaked source code. I'm sure carmack has made many improvements upon certain core systems since quake 1 that are different in doom3, but still still reside in hl2.

I can't help but laugh when I see you guys dissing doom3 as quake 3 with better lighting effects, when hl2 is quake 1, with less revolutionary lighting effects. Kind of flawed logic.

Because the doom3 source didn't get leaked? I think the doom3 enigne is much more advanced in certain areas, but I think hl2 probably has better support for different types of games and game types, (when's the last shot you saw of doom3 wiht terrain?). And I think the "plasticy" look is all based on the settings and low rez textures they are using.
