  1. I dunno, I guess that from the home page posts give a better indication of how lively a forum is than threads — for example EOT has relatively few threads, but many have literally hundreds of posts. Whatever the reasoning was, you can see posts via the home page and threads/topics at the top of an individual forum. I guess you could squeeze both values in each place but it doesn't seem worth it.

  3. lmao. Thread is the whole thing, also known as a topic. Posts are the individual comments, like this.
  4. What an excellent thread! I have nothing more to add.
  5. Yes, it's not super high on the priority list but I'll get round to it. Even small tweaks like that require testing on different screen sizes and platforms to make sure text is still readable, etc.
  6. The time is definitely right for Flash to die. It was set into motion years ago by Apple, and enough of the web can now operate just fine without it. The only sad thing is that a large part of the web's history will be inaccessible. I don't know about anyone else — and this might be something that more people do as they get older and the internet is literally part of them growing up — but I do like occasionally going through the Internet Archive and checking out old sites from the 90s and 2000s, many of which I visited or even created. It's unfortunate that as a result of killing Flash, swathes of old sites won't work properly any more. Especially when you consider that those who build the internet have worked so hard to make things backwards compatible so that virtually everything except Flash still works just fine, even on a website from 1995. How many kinds of technology can you say that about?
  7. You almost gave me a heart attack then. It's 2000 posts, not threads — thank god!
  8. Yeah, in essence the forum needs to crawl itself. I'm kicking off a quick crawl tonight so hopefully that will improve matters.
  9. Searching is something that I'll work on improving. I had to lock it down quite tightly a couple of weeks ago because someone was hitting it with extremely intensive searches every second, which led to immense slowdown. It took me some time to figure out this was what was happening, and during the process of elimination to find the cause I ended up wiping the search indexes and putting unforgiving search delays into place. I can now relax these and rebuild the indexes, which ironically enough will cause some slowdown but should improve things afterwards. I'll try to kick that off tonight when things are quieter. I would have done this sooner but I've been abroad for the last 1.5 weeks.
  10. I just cleared the forum caches, for some reason something there was causing a lot of slowdown. I've gathered server logs and am having the vendor look into what might have caused this.

  12. This is seriously some of the saddest shit I've heard in ages. He was a great force in gaming, and it sounds like he ran his company in a way that was really awesome for its developers — quite contrary to what I've heard about a lot of Japanese organisations — as well as got stuck in himself wherever he could. He understood his company and its heritage down to the roots and that's so nice to see in a modern gaming giant. And then he died so young. Saw this quote on another forum earlier:

    PlanetSide 2

Just highlighting that (at bloody last) it's been released for the PlayStation 4. I haven't spent much time with it, but it seems reasonably solid and it remains the only game really doing this kind of thing — which to an extent makes up for its various shortcomings, because holy shit some of the moments in this game are great. I suspect that Battlefront is going to refine a lot of this into a more condensed but extremely fun shooter much like Battlefield 2142 did with PlanetSide, but it's a good stopgap for those who didn't play the PC version, like, years ago. Because it's brand new on PS4 to an audience that's never experienced a game like this there's a pretty cool sense of excitement to it all right now, although how many people are actually on board I have no idea. Still, been no shortage of action for me so far and apparently the servers are getting wrecked. Here is an assortment of terrible footage I captured using the handy capture button: You might catch me playing on one of the EU servers if you add RyanJW to PSN.
  14. There are options on that page that let you specify the time period and/or whether it just includes stuff you haven't read.
  15. I'll pass the feedback on, I did poke around and it's basically using a customised version of a widely used editor (CKEditor). The technical difference between it and the old mobile editor is that previously it was just a basic text input with no formatting ability, which Safari (and probably Android browsers) find easier to work with in terms of auto-correct, etc. A rich editor like this uses a completely different mechanism, which Safari is currently still a bit iffy with. I've noticed this on all kinds of sites that use this way of editing, so hopefully a combination of Safari updates and forum updates will get things into a better state before long. Still, at least now I can format on my phone without needing to insert tags, which is a huge PITA. As for the viewport, there is actually a viewport set but it's not a fixed width. This is best practice as limiting the web browser's ability to zoom in is extremely bad for accessibility, although in Safari at least it does cause the quirk you mention of the view not resetting to the fully zoomed out view when the editor is unfocused. Perhaps some scripting or adjusting can fix this, I'll pass it on and perhaps even have a stab at myself to help them out, as it irritates me too.
  16. @D3ads I don't think so. I believe that it uses your web browser's local storage, so that if you get an error while submitting, accidentally refresh, etc then your post will survive. I've lost a lot of posts over the years due to such things so it seems more good than bad. Also Sprony is right, stop half-writing posts man.
  17. @laminutederire the only way to remove quotes on mobile seems to be selecting the text within them and deleting it all, and then the quote disappears after a final backspace. Sometimes the editor goes a bit wonky on touch devices. albeit less since a patch I applied earlier this week. In such cases, closing the keyboard and touching the editor again fixes it for me.
  18. It's probably a bug or limitation of the parser, which I'll pass along to its developers. Even without the extension, the Akamai server is probably still passing the correct MIME type in its header which allows web browsers to display it. The parser likely isn't examining the file itself at all, simply trying to understand what it is based on URL.
  19. All right, I guess the automatic insertion is still a bit ropy so using 'Insert other media' to insert them like the old image button might be more reliable. In your case though @jackophant there is clearly an issue there, from looking in the console that particular URL is causing a parsing error so my guess is that the inserter is struggling to read it as the URL of an image. It is quite unusual for an image to not have any kind of extension, so it's probably just a bug. For now I can only suggest attaching it or throwing it on imgur.
  20. The signature changes are in motion, they'll be back. @jackophant do you have an example of a Steam image I can test with? @LizardPL it's generally hitting RETURN that triggers the image to be inserted, if you're not doing it via the 'Insert other media' button. From looking at your screenshot it's possible that they ended up as clickable links instead, which might be due to how the web browser copied them (Chrome likes doing this unless you select 'paste as plain text' when right clicking) or the editor just getting confused. If you remove the link and/or press RETURN at the end of the URL it might fix it. Also if you have the URL to that post I can take a look.

    The Witcher 3

Nothing personally, but I've thrown the question at people I know who like The Witcher 3. I'll let you know tomorrow if anything comes through.
  24. Ah man, this is going to be incredible. Spoiler for trailer and previous games:
