  1. Didn't know if I should necro my old thread for this one, but I have made some updates since it was part of the faceit hub rotation. Still throwing in some visual updates here and there. More screens at the workshop thread

    3D Printing

Never really had a big issue with the heat but I had the printer so I thought I might as well try it! The noctua fan I got even came with some 3M scotchloks so no soldering required. I had the other parts lying around and took apart an old USB cable. The fit for the cable was quite tight and I used the smallest cable I had. I took the plastic casing off and everything. Maybe consider getting the socket @leplubodeslapin recomends on thingverse. Some of my findings: Needs a switch, shouldn't have printed the switchless version (usb doesn't depower when index goes to sleep) Printed vertically on a raft, looks better and easy removal of support. Also ~2hr shorter print! Feels good to wear, don't feel the heat radiating from the screens anymore. Should be great for long sessions of alyx, might replay it now. The front sponge still gets wet after some beatsaber but I don't think even another fan would help with that. The fan I got is audible but not as bad as the basestations.

  4. Hi all, I recently started working on Caligula, a classic 5v5 map for CS:GO. Caligula is set on the island of Malta in the 1960's. For this project I'm going for bright colors and great visibility. So far I worked on the main layout. I then slapped some textures on it, to define a mood and see how I can set this map apart from other maps with the usual "mediterranean" setting. I'm also playing around with my own dev textures this early, to spot any problems with visibility early on. The layout has not been playtested yet, so any feedback is greatly appreciated. This friday I'm doing a first playtest, so I expect the layout to change a lot after that. Workshop link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2412138868 Thank you for showing an interest in my project and I look forward to any feedback! An overview shot of T spawn. T's spawn on that little bridge over there. The way up to A, towards the church in the distance. Bombsite A is right behind the church. Bombsite A features some old Greek ruin. To get to bombsite B from T spawn you have to go through this little fish shop. The official callout for this place is simply "fish". The area where T's can set up to enter B. Bombsite B, featuring an old statue, currently a boilerplate prop. A view into bombsite B.

oops ^^' sorry The one i'm using is pretty standard I designed it so that it stays inside the surface and doesn't prevent you from using the translucent plastic cover But in the end my 3D Printer isn't calibrated very well, so the front plastic cover didn't fit really well (might work better by printing it vertically though). I don't know if there's enough gap for the air to move in between, maybe not. But yea there must be a way to drive the USB from software, because it's designed to be able to receive custom mods and stuff. It would mean that maybe the fan would have to be driven by a data signal and not just powered by the default 5V of a USB plug, so it becomes more complex but probably doable (I wouldn't know how though)

That's amazing @jd40 thanks for printing it !! Yea I feel so dumb I didn't even try, of course you're right, it looks better, prints faster ... The only thing you need to be careful with is not to go to hard when screwing the 4 fans and 4 main screws, to avoid breaking the print. If you have a ref/sizes for a switch and want me to update the geometry for it, feel free to ask. I didn't release the sources files because i made it with Catia (a CAD software that isn't known much outside of the industry) and had to clean some nasty topology stuff in blender afterwards, it was a bit too messy ^^' Really good looking print, congratz

Our first slot on the mapcore hubs is over and we've got a lot of feedback regarding various areas around the map. Right now, we are working on an update which will be playable on the hubs on march 30. Here are some sliders that show our progress so far. (Please let me know if there is a better way to embed those on the forums). https://imgsli.com/NDU1ODc https://imgsli.com/NDU1ODk https://imgsli.com/NDU1OTA https://imgsli.com/NDU1OTE https://imgsli.com/NDU1OTI https://imgsli.com/NDU1OTM https://imgsli.com/NDU1OTU https://imgsli.com/NDU1OTc https://imgsli.com/NDU2MDA Cheers!

    Marvel Cinematic Universe

Just started re-watching the films again in more or less chronological order, it's weird watching the first Captain America then Captain Marvel and then Iron Man, over a decade of time difference...

    Corona Virus

Yeah we started watching it and it's on point but not as funny as the Pandemic special. I guess just not enough Randy in the first 10 minutes (that's all we watched cause we have kids and fall asleep quickly when watching TV after 10 pm). Is there more Randy later in the episode? Wait don't tell me. Meanwhile: <rant> We know a lot of people in 20s/30s/40s gaming the system saying they are in critical IT services or childcare or something to get them eligible for the vaccine in various parts of California and other states when in fact they are not in those fields nor do they have any other condition that would make them eligible. Or they know people and are getting sneaked in the front of the line. Around where we live all the pharmacies are being very strict about verifying claims of eligibility so my wife and I can't get vaccine yet. So we are a little pissed off that people we know are gaming the system and being total douches. I mean, if I can get it in the next few weeks anyway I'm not going to care that much but it just rubs me the wrong way. My parents got vaccinated which is great but goddamn I really want to hang out with them in their house and have a meal with them already. My mom has legit cooking skills and is bursting to cook for us again. (My parents have some underlying risk factors for severe covid and FFS we are not taking any chances of accidental exposure even if they got the vaccine so we all agreed not to get together indoor without masks until my wife and I get vaccinated.) Yeah I know...first world problem here. </rant>

  11. (sorry for necro, but me and I'm sure some other people sometimes refer back to this thread occasionally when doing detail stuff, since there's yet a page on the VDC.) So I've done some testing on the world space masks and how exactly they line up with your hammer grid. Scenario One: Square Map This is pretty simple. Your tint/type mask is a square texture, and Source creates a bounding box around your map. If your map is square, this works out pretty simple and your world space mask will cover the entire map. It is aligned to the bottom left of the bounding box created (when looking down from the 2d top view in Hammer). Scenario Two: 'L' shaped map This is pretty similar to the square map - Hammer creates a bounding box around your map and aligns the world space mask to the bottom left. Even if your map has the corner of the 'L' in the top right, your world space mask is still aligned to the bottom left corner of your maps bounding box. Scenario Three: Rectangular Map The world space masks are still aligned to the bottom left of your maps bounding box, however it's important to note that they do not stretch aspect ratio! Scenario Four: Unconnected sections If your map has different sections (completely separated by void/skybox), a bounding box is created over your whole map and the tint mask is still aligned to the bottom left. Scenario Five: Map with large amounts of 'void' at the borders. So I've talked a lot about the bounding box of your map, however its also important to note that this bounding box is only created from the corners of textured displacements - the void does not count! This means if your map has a box skybox from one corner of the hammer grid to the other, but only has one small displacement in the middle, the bounding box only counts for that displacement. Scenario Six: 3d skybox next to your main map (not above or below) If there is a sky_camera in part of your level, that part of the level does not count towards the bounding box created. This means you don't have to put your 3d skybox under or below your level and it's perfectly fine being next to it. It's also important to note that I'm not sure exactly how the world space masks line up with 3d skybox, seems to be a bit different from a regular level (but who's gonna put detail sprites in the 3d sky anyway lol).

  12. Not a screenshot, but I did recently create a Monty Hall problem simulator mainly using logic entities. In my version, the cars and goats have been replaced with cash and fire: And here's a couple of videos of me running 100 simulations: The process of creating this simulator is a bit long and you can read about it here. However, the AddOutput command was very useful preventing the map igniting the same button the player picked during the first round (i.e. preventing something like this from happening). You can test this simulator out yourself on my map am_muntions_cache. It's a secret area, but it's pretty easy to noclip to.

Hello I just submitted a 1 fan version on my Valve index mod. It can feel like a rollback but it's actually a better version I believe : 1 fan is enough to pull out the warm air, it's not that big It's a lot easier to make the USB plug, much more space for it Added a switch to control the fan Filled and the tiny holes that were making it less efficient Here it is with a few pictures in case someone is interested : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4735054 (and I also updated the 2 fans version with the holes filled too : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4565466)
