Sorry but categorically not. A greybox that has had time to form is the foundation of an entire map. Art adds to certain playable elements but you could wrap the same design in multiple themes and not drastically alter the quality of the map. Its literally happened for multi game IPs (Halo, Gears, CoD) where they reskin an old map. Its honestly depressing that these contests are repeatedly about style over substance with a focus on art being the most important element. Edit - Sorry that last statement might be a little unfair and it isn't to discredit the effort or work people put into their art, its more that rules that allow people to skip the design stage devalue the tests focus on designing and finalling a map.

    Battlefield V

Had a blast with this over the weekend with my friends. We all got the EA Access pass for a month so we could play early. All the maps feel great in conquest, but some can be difficult as hell in Grand Operations. Attackers normally get raped, especially when it's the take the bomb to destroy the gun objective. The bomb carrier really shouldn't be highlighted at all times, it makes attacking impossible. Plus the flak often kills you before you can leave the plane, which is kinda realistic but when you don't have the extra tickets to account for it it's not as cool. Gun play is solid though and the squad revives and fortification building is great for team work. Pretty much always see squads stick together now which is great! Glad 3D spotting is gone as it makes sneaking and flanking much easier now since you don't have a glowing red triangle over your head all the time. Seeing a lot of "only in Battlefield" moments too with planes crashing around me and the V-1 rockets are awesome fun to use. I think the only thing I dislike is the amount of button clicks it takes to customise your soldier. Constantly going back and forth in menus it seems. But I think a fix is coming for that soon. Also, anything you unlock you can't use until you leave the server. I hate this. I don't want to have to leave the server and queue again for something I've unlocked during gameplay. It should be in my inventory ready to use. But the WW2 setting looks beautiful in 2018. Can't wait to see some more maps with hopefully more iconic locations from some big battles. Oh, and great job on Fjell, Puddy. It's a great infantry map

About the rule: Since it's so hard to tell if a greybox has been created a long time ago or only recently, another aspect has to be taken into account instead of the vmf's creation date. There is a clear indicator however to see how much progress has been achieved: Playtests. The rule could state that only maps are eligible to enter the contest, which have not been playtested yet - privately or publicly. If an entry turns out to be tested prior to the contest, you could introduce penalty points during the judging process. In addition to the rule that having art on the map leads to disqualification of the entry, this could be an option to allow for a mostly even playing field. Also about the judging process. Please, please do actual playtests. At least of the Top X maps. Analyzing a map carefully can only tell so much of the whole story.

Pardon me for barging in, but how can you know if a map was playtested or not? even if it's just graybox.

I'm completely biased here, but I think it would be a shame to entirely exclude maps that had been worked on before the contest announcement. It wasn't clear when or even if there would be another contest and I'd rather not have to pick putting my current work on ice for a year or not taking part in the contest. I completely get that having additional weeks or months can seem very unfair, but I think the area where it'll show up most will be polish. 9 months should be enough for any team to make a solid layout and some pretty good art. A level that was started prior to the contest would be expected to be much more polished by the end of it and that could be reflected in the judging. For example, if 20 points are given out for polish and overall quality, then it could be set to max. 10 points for maps that were already being worked on. I wasn't participating in the last contest, so I'd be curious to know how much the "already worked on maps" rule really contributed to the finalists and winners. Did anyone really get their position in the contest by simply submitted a map that was already half done?

@DMU222, what's the big wall with the crazy paving slabs supposed to be? If it's a cliff face I think you need to rethink your texture choice and sculpt the displacement a bit more.

I just downloaded your map from the workshop and the loading screen works What i observed after the panorama update is that some .dds radars made with gimp had the colours changed to some yellow and purple combinations.

This ruling was terrible in the previous contest. It read: Maps that were under creation prior to the announcement of this Contest can be entered, as long as a complete map version (layout and art) has not been released for public download. If that's not a half measure I don't know what is. Where do you draw the line and how is it fair? It was very sketchy. Imo the obvious answer is to not allow maps (a vmf) that was under construction prior to the contest. You'd have to assume most people will be honest with their submission.

v1.15 is up, my friends! Notable changes with this version: Fixed an issue where radar was misaligned since the Panorama update Added color correction to kill low-ends and improve visibility in dark areas, notably the tunnels near T-spawn (yep... I didn't know post-processing existed in this engine up until now ) Changed CT models back to SAS, to prevent them from blending in with foliage (they might change again in the future, as long as it fits the Skopelos setting) Clip-brushed a couple foliage spots that were easily exploitable Fixed a lot of a dark, heavily shadowed surfaces (still not completely done with that one... takes forever I swear) Replaced ugly buggy flag I made with beautiful flag from @I ♡ The 1950's (Thanks again for that!) Removed an overpowered cover on Bombsite A, the small wall right next to the half-moon block Made many small, mostly visuals improvements all across the map! Most important known issues I'm tackling for v1.16: Bug where none of the looping ambient sounds will play (I swear when this one is fixed, I pop the champagne) Some very cheeky spots that are still in there (small cracks we can shoot through and stuff like that) Issue where custom loading screen image doesn't show up since Panorama update Some very dark surfaces that are still there, found especially around windows and door frames Special thanks to @Radu for the great feedback! My goal is to organize a playtest ASAP, and have this thing finished once and for all before the Christmas holidays. Working on Source is very... interesting, to say to least. I will certainly write a post-mortem at the end of this, and present it here or in a separate thread... there's so much things I learned and would like to share, if you guys are interested! Cheers!

One of the projects I've recently been putting quite some hours in is this one. I'm recreating the deathmatch map 'Southern France' (or mohdm1) from Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Currently done with the inital brushwork and finally felt confident enough to show some people. Note; Zero effort has been put into lighting and textures yet; only the rough brushwork is done. Eyecandy if I may say so: Now the huge task of texturing, lighting and detailing lies before me..
