What's going on with your life?

So, I'm now nearing the end of the year and have been focusing on a few things like I stated last time, I now live in a lovely house with my wife & daughter, I still have the day job as a bin man but again it pays the bills. Most importantly though is having a nice space to work in, I'm not huddled in a corner anymore, I'm in an attic which I converted into my office/game room so I can just go nuts up here, this year has taught me a lot about prioritizing and what I need to do to achieve greater things, so I've enrolled in a few UDemy courses to expand my skillset a bit, most importantly is the ability to create 3D models, something I've always needed when creating my own work and will help me create content down the road. Being diagnosed with Crohns disease wasn't helpful near the start of the year but I'm now at a point where I just live with it and I'm happier for it, I'm in pain a lot but meh f**k it, I'm still standing and enjoying my life so letting it get to me won't help matters. So here I am, ready to tackle 2016 and hopefully be a bit more active here again, this is an amazing community and could never forget about this place ^^

Car Update: 3rd party accepted liability, so I've had all excess fees waived and my No Claims Bonus reinstated. The repair shop closes in a couple of days so I won't get my car back until the new year, but luckily it's only superficial damage and can be fixed! I can't wait to get my baby back

Pretty! Visually, like it was noted to OrnateBaboon for de_coast, in this screenshot the pointy platform should be probably softened by chopping the tip. You can very well cut it to have it the width of the "column"(?) and rotate the last column 90 deg to keep the geometry clean.

    Star Wars

Movie was trash, it was literally A New Hope rehashed with shakycam and flashy lasers. Far too fast paced, very little character development, a lead who's acting has been widely called out as the weakest part of the whole film ... Yeah. Sure there were parts that felt like star wars, but there was soooo much paying lip-service to the fans that it was actually retarded. OH LOOK another shot of x-wings flying through a trench EXACTLY LIKE THE DEATH STAR IN A NEW HOPE. When Ren is fighting Finn and Rey OH LOOK another shot of PULLING A LIGHTSABER FROM THE SNOW WITH THE FORCE, JUST LIKE LUKE ON HOTH. The entire fucking movie was completely unimaginative and consistently just leaned on rehashing iconic visuals and characters from the previous films. I hope they've got it all out of their systems now so that EP8 might actually do something new and interesting.

Glad to hear there's no serious damage! I'm surprised they waited for the other side to accept liability. You had video evidence it wasn't your fault. With my crash they said I didn't have to pay any excess or lose my no claims bonus since it clearly wasn't my fault. But hey, glad it's worked out for you and will only end up being a minor inconvenience!

You need to make a custom map config. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/CSGO_Custom_Game_Mode mp_respawn_immunitytime // How many seconds after respawn immunity lasts. mp_respawn_on_death_t // When set to 1, terrorists will respawn after dying. mp_respawn_on_death_ct // When set to 1, counter-terrorists will respawn after dying. mp_use_respawn_waves // When set to 1, and that player's team is set to respawn, they will respawn in waves. mp_respawnwavetime_ct // Time between respawn waves for CTs. mp_respawnwavetime_t // Time between respawn waves for Terrorists.

Altitude A small project I have been working on this weekend, a lose recreation of Air Force One (More a new design based on the existing one). The map is set up as a hostage scenerio. This map is more aimed at a fun, different style of play rather than a serious, competitive map. I will be adding broken wall as support in the next patch for the car : -)! And voila the princess is gone and Arabic architecture took her place! I will be making the rest of the half pillar however I liked the idea of the pillar being decayed and old so I want to make it a bit better looking with wooden supports and such : -)!

Physics? These half pillars look really odd, just make the arches bigger and have each support go down to the ground. The princess castle needs to go, it doesn't make sense imo.

WIP in WIP, post your level screenshots!

I don't want to turn this thread into a chat room, so I'll post this here so people know in advance. The bigger structures of the tower are inside 3D skybox, which saves the performance. Most of the smaller details are props, some of them such as the "spears" I had to turn them into models using Propper as well, so it doesn't hog the performance. They are made from brushwork though. Most of it is just texture work, one of my friends was visiting that place a few months ago and sent me a few snaps so I turned them into textures. Some of the parts were very low detail so I had to redraw it completely using Photoshop. The result is quite satisfying, though. So far I haven't had any issues with performance of the map. I am also using normal maps to make the textures look a bit more "indent", but this was after I took these screenshots. I want to make the map look authentic, but at the same time stray away from being completely too realistic, not only because of my poor capabilities and performance reasons, but also because of all the Terrorism issues going around. The tower is not a complete 1:1 carbon copy, of course. Anyways, I'll keep you guys updated on this thread as I go. I might also release the .vmf after I publish the map so people could check it out and learn something new from it, so keep an eye out for that.

I've scrolled through the pdf file and just couple things: the references don't have an email either clickable or plain textScorsese's name is misspelled (it's ScorSese)I find heavy on the eye the use of m-dashes to separate the lists in the interests, what's wrong with commas? In general I think it'd be nicer to have some more line-spacing in the paragraphs, looks like you want to keep the document in the 2 pages, so I would remove the music+cinema mentions in the interests (as they are pretty varied, nothing really stands out like saying eg "fan of Korean horror movies") keep the interest one paragraph shorter (in vertical space) gaining precious space you could use to work on typography

I don't pretend to have the all the answers, but in my opinion you need to figure out what you want to apply for first. That's probably quite hard to do if you like all those things equally, but it's necessary. If I imagine someone working at Epic or another one of those companies you listed and receiving 2 applications from the same person, one for junior game designer, the other for junior level designer, I would expect them to be a little put off by the fact that you don't seem to know what you want. Those can be vastly different jobs and sets of responsibilities depending on the company. Of course, even if you 'choose wrong' and realize working as a GD or manager or LD is not fulfilling, there is always room for growth/change at most companies: once you know the team and they think of you as a person/colleague, not a name on a resume. Even bringing up the fact that you don't know whether you should apply as a GD or a LD at an interview can be valid, because you've established that human contact and can explain your situation, and interviewers can sympathise with you. I think it's that first step where they don't know anything about you and you must make a good enough impression to move on to the next steps of the recruiting process that it's going to be hard to cross if you don't know what you want. Could work if you have contacts already at a company though. This may even be a case of you visiting the office and spending some time with both GDs and LDs to get a gut check on what you think would suit you the most, but again that assumes you have this human contact with someone at that company. Sorry that there's no formula to getting hired, it's a lot of luck, a lot based on who you know too. Beyond that, it's pretty much common sense, and trying to put yourself in the shoes of the recruiter and seeing how you come across as a candidate.

Yes, focusing portfolio is not a good idea at all. If you can make a 3D art, show it. If you can make nice pictures, make sure to put that somewhere in your folio. When I'm checking someone's website I want to learn as much as I can to know if you'll fit into the team. Often it's not experience and your levels but your "kind of being" - if you're easy going, finishing projects, willing to learn and accepting feedback then you're on a good way. I mean, it depends actually on the employer. Some companies, or I would say, serious leaders will take your different experiences and skills as an advantage (photography will prove your art and composition skills/understanding; adding your steam account link will allow us to take a look on your gamers you play and if we want an active player then this is how it can be judged on the first time - before the call or studio interview), lazy or uninformed bosses can be like "Get rid of it, you're LD and it stays like that". As you can see, it comes to the responsibilities. If someone want to make you a cog in the huge machine, they'll check your most important and main skill. If someone wants to build a team of experts that will work smooth and independent then probably they'll be looking for people with leadership skills and positive attitude, knowing many different aspects of working in the industry etc. It's hard to find that kind of people and I think that only huge companies can effort to hire such guy when they already understood their value (the candidates of course, not employers ;)). So when making a portfolio, create an image of a great employee, not a cog in the machine. It's not like you should be a one-man-army kind of designer but the openness for new experiences and skills should be somehow presented. It shows how you're wired, it's a part of your attitude. In short, imagine that you start with 100 points and you're getting negative points for anything that you don't need for this current dude you're applying to. One can leave you with 5 points left because you have crap that he's not interested in (which can be really wrong idea for hiring) or someone can give you 85 points because of some minor stuff and he actually liked it and he found what he was looking for.

It seems a little narrow for a race track, even for Monaco. Also the markings in the ground suggest this the the start/finish line, a wider piece of track with grandstands and the whole pits. I would widen it a little and remove the floor markings. The gap in the barriers is very unrealistic. The only gaps in real tracks are run off areas and the entrances run parallel to the track with the entrance at the opposite direction the race to avoid a car spinning off into one, it would have to go back on itself to do so. Getting real picky but why would they leave a several million dollar car on the track? It is not like the whole grid of cars was abandoned just before the race started. Sorry to sound picky but I really want this map to be as awesome as possible. Nice start though, looking foward to more. Real monaco start/finish:

Hey there, my name is James and I've only recently put on my Indiedev/Gamedev hat. I've alway been a programmer, ever since I was 8 years old and discovered DOS was bundled with QBASIC and from there my attention shifted from playing games to making them even from that early age. My career and life took me in a different direction but I'd always come back and have a pop at games creation with a number of different tools. Recently I completed a number of software development modules for my degree and I came across Unity and that was it for me; Sold. So the best game I ever played was Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, some time ago they started a Kickstarter for a sequel but it fell through and with seemingly nothing on the horizon I set to work at making a prototype. I didn't want just another RTS so I paid particular attention to the different classes of ship, how they moved and their arnaments with particular attention paid to turrets and arcs of fire. I wanted physics and detail modelled to the finest degree possible with current hardware and I essentially wanted to achieve something as close to a TV movie space battle as possible, you might be chuckling by now I know I was laughing at myself but I stuck with it. I'm glad I did because I've shocked myself with the result, Shallow Space is nearing the end of the prototype stage, I've proved to myself it can be done to sufficient scale - now i'm moving it towards the concept and crowdfunding. In the meantime I'm starting to assemble a following, building backstory and I blog like the worlds about to end. Here's a vid, the AI behaviour is next on the list and collision avoidance is something of a fine art so go easy
