    [WIP] UE4 - Dexter Morgan's apartment

working on the ktichen... changed it to sunrise now...
  2. 4 points
Still working on this, it's been going quite slowly since I only ever managed to work on it for an hour or two at a time every few days or so due to my job...some weeks not at all...but starting next month I'll be reducing my hours at work to really focus on pushing this. That said, despite the slow pace I am quite happy with the direction I am headed. What you see here is a first pass of pretty much everything. I have concentrated on just adding the main props and objects to the place first. The texturing is a rough first pass,.. with the exception of a few props I really only slapped some placeholder textures on things for now. I am pretty much done adding the main objects to the scene, so the next step will be to start really texturing things and then adding detail props and clutter. I want to add a story element to the scene as well...(thanks for the idea Jobye), nail down the mood and lighting, yadda yadda yadda... Anyway, I know I haven't updated much but I expect things to start moving more steadily come August.

    [WIP] UE4 - Dexter Morgan's apartment

Hey guys I figured it was time I created something new. I have been taking a bit of a break which has been refreshing but my fingers are itching again, so here we are I've started a little UE4 project, which is to create Dexter Morgan's apartment in UE4. The goal is to have it as close as possible to the original from the series, with lots of clutter, lots of different material types and different lighting scenarios (day/night)... I have just done the blockout so far, modeled and textured the sofa and made a first pass on the floor texture. Anyway, I know it's early but here are couple of shots... I'll keep updating this as I go along Good to be back!

The differences between the CS:S version and CS:GO version are too minor to overcome our barrier on remakes. This was not a decision made lightly. The contest, however, has a no remakes policy and this map was clearly (in our opinion) a remake. I'm confident that we will see the map in an Operation one day I'll be happy to provide my own feedback to help ensure that that happens. It's by all measures an excellent piece of work.

I don't think this is very fair. I don't want to throw anyone under the bus, but this is not the only map that's been developed in different versions of Counter-Strike. If the older version of the map wasn't his design I could understand, but this is just a continuation of his work. I think an all or nothing rule needs to be in place, otherwise it's just picking on a specific entry. Realistically it's pretty clear that those who started their projects long before the contest or those working in coalitions will have a much better chance of winning anyways, this entry isn't going to tip the contest further than anyone else has. Not trying to start arguments here, just stating my opinion.

Okay, the new name is royal. Here are screenshots of the new version with more little details. I also made the map a little more sunny and added sounds. PS I also made B 100% more dangerous, the police cars flash and there are deadly explosives wired to the yellow car. Pictures

    Random dude to Level artist

3Dnj nailed it perfectly, lol. To add a bit to that, a level artist also needs to be technically knowledgeable as well. You need to learn the engine you're working on, inside out. Since you are going to be the hub for level designers, environment artists and lighting artists, it's where it all meets so you need to always keep the game's performance in mind, at all times. You may be able to do the most beautiful level in the planet, but if it doesn't run on low specs / consoles, it's no good. Depending on the desired goal, you need to pick the cheapest and best technique to achieve the look you're going after, again, by using the engine to it's fullest, decals, light masks, 3d models, all the way to mess around with occluders to make sure the engine only renders what's necessary, and not what's behind walls, etc. That's all your responsibility. Also, you'll be talking with engineers a lot, about making optimizations to currently existing tech and helping them implementing new tech. (I remember back in c2, we had so many decals in the levels, they were making consoles crawl, so we needed to come up with a cheaper method of projecting decals on surfaces. (Deferred decals) Of course, to add to all of that, you need to have a keen artistic eye. The golden word here is: composition! You're going to be responsible for more gameplay, a lot. It's your responsability that the player never gets lost in the visual noise that art may be causing, by using leading lines, contrasting light, and just the way you place objects. (If you want to practice composition, i recommend you give environment concept art and photography a shot, the methods you learn there can be translated into a game too) Also, you might not be creating new assets right off the bat, but you're going to be responsible for pretty much all of them. If a floor is dark, and the wall is bright, it's on you to "marry" those assets together by using whatever methods necessary, tweaking textures, tweaking materials, tweaking lighting, etc. Good luck! Burrito sighing off!

    Random dude to Level artist

Level Artist tasks really depends of the company itself. Imo, LA don't do models and textures, wich is the tasks of an Environment Artist, but build the levels from LD's sketch to final debugging. In some companies, LD and LA make the layout of the map together. You need to push the visual of your map, makes all the details and lighting (except if the company has Lighting Artist) but you also need to collaborate with Level Designers to make sure visual and gameplay go to the same direction and also make sure that LD's don't make crazy "unartable" things. It's also full of technical constraint, you are the one who need to check collisions, navigation, framerate, etc... as you are the guy who take cares of the map. I'm a level Artist and I'm a shitty texture and model maker (I means I have some great skills for a PS2 game :D) and also I can't draw a shit !!!

Please don't make anything up. When you say "Mediterranean" town, I'm hoping you don't mean inferno. You must have looked at locations for reference. Work on that basis if anything. But in all honesty, your use of the name arcade is absolutely fine. It's where an "amusement arcade" gets it's name from, so it's just a victim of it's own popularity. I think the name is fine, but you will have a lot of "where are the arcade machine" questions, so only change it if that bothers you EDIT: there may be competition issues with the inferno bell tower construction being ripped straight out of the map as the majority of it is brush work not a model. Worth checking on though.

(Art by Thurnip) /r/GlobalOffensive and Mapcore are teaming up to grow Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s mapping community! Check out the reddit thread for this contest » The Big Reveal We’re hosting a map-making contest for original, competitive 5v5 bomb defusal maps AND competitively-minded hostage maps, open exclusively to mappers who have not yet had their work featured in a Valve Operation! Older projects are fair game: now’s the perfect time to polish up that map you’ve been working on but never got around to finishing. Experienced Mapcore judges and prominent members of the Counter-Strike community such as Sadokist, Moses, DDK, James Bardolph, and Anders Blume will be weighing in – but only one map can win it all. Helpful Playtesting Every week for the length of the contest, eligible maps will be playtested during /r/GlobalOffensive community nights according to a sign-up schedule. Slots on this schedule will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis following an approval process, but we will try our best to accommodate everyone at least once. However, because it’s impossible to guarantee that all contest entries will have the chance to be playtested, /r/GlobalOffensive playtesting is a supplemental, helpful tool which will have no bearing whatsoever on contest judging. You can register for a playtesting slot here. Remember -- playtesting registration is first-come, first-serve! Enter Your Level To officially enter your level into this contest, post a WIP thread with a link to your level’s Steam Workshop page in Mapcore’s official event forum. Posting a WIP thread with a link to your level’s Steam workshop page constitutes your official entry into the contest, however you don’t need to do both at the same time. In other words, you can post your WIP thread and then update it later with your workshop link if you’re not ready to go right away. You can also feel free to continue updating your workshop level after you’ve posted your workshop link – contest entries will not be judged until after the submission deadline. The Deadline Your level must be submitted to Mapcore by August 31st, 2015 at midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST). Our panel of judges will then select four finalist levels based on the following criteria: Fun factorVisual/thematic presentation (graphics)Overall polish Grand Prize Deadline After the top four maps have been announced, /r/GlobalOffensive users will put them to the test! Once all four finalist maps have been tested, mappers will have two weeks to revise their work based on community feedback. After those two weeks, an official Grand Prize Winning Map will be chosen! Contest Calendar Our Goal The goal of this event is to raise awareness about Mapcore's incredible level design community and the incredibly useful playtesting capabilities of /r/GlobalOffensive. Both Mapcore and /r/GlobalOffensive are free resources available to all mappers. To date, Mapcore users are responsible for creating more than 70% of Valve Operation levels. Mapcore’s staff are unpaid volunteers, and do not personally profit in any way from additional traffic to the site. Prizes Of course, it wouldn’t be a contest without a reward… In addition to the helpful feedback and free publicity that CS:GO mappers will receive by participating in this event, each finalist will also receive: Eternal Bragging Rights™ and a showcase on Mapcore (where their level will be highly visible to industry-veteran game developers and the rest of the community)A monetary prize ($1000 + Mapcore swag for first place; $400 for second place; $200 for third place; $100 and Mapcore swag for fourth place)The top-finishing map will also be played in a competitive show-match casted and streamed by goRGNtv, for all to watch and enjoy!*NEW* CEVO has generously agreed to host the winning map in their PUG rotations for one month!*NEW* Added $1,000 to prize pool thanks to Gamebanana.com and EGO DEATH (gun skin creator)*NEW* Valve prizes! The story behind cache is that the terrorist are trying to destroy a weapons Cache iirc hence the weapon crates on Bombsite b and the armoured car in the box on A site. I think any criticism is good. Many maps are getting no feedback at all and a name means a lot to a map. When you look at the workshop all you get is a single screenshot and the name. Half of whether you decided to look at the map further is the name so I think having a strong and related one is key.

Arcade A bomb defuse map set in a mediterranean village. Visual stile is similar to the official maps italy and inferno, but gameplay is a little different to most maps. I tried to make the bombsites more accessible for Ts than usual and on the other hand CT gamelay is a lot more centralized, which gives plenty of map control to a single player. I have already published this map last year, but I have made a couple of changes and tweaks. Unfortunately didn't get a lot of feedback. Maybe I'm a little bit late here, but I hope that this contest could give me some additional feedback. Workshop link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=320674385

What's up mapcore! A few weeks ago i just tried to make a test work on Level artist position. And today i got email with offer to work on unannounced project on CRYENGINE as Level artist. I'm happy to know it, but i have one big problem. The problem is - i'm not an artist... I know how to model, texture, setting up shaders, light. But I don't even know how to draw, concept and etc. I working last 2.5 years on a level designer position, but more like a generalist. That mean i start locations from prototyping location(greybox porn), gameplay, balance, content tasks for 3d artist - to finalization, like texture correction, setting up light, atmosphere. And it's fun! So, draw - it is very critical for Level artist? Any tips/secrets for a newbie Level artist? Something about the specifics?

Way to dust off the old stash, 10 years later and still mapping!? Would really like to test this map in both 10v10 and 5v5 to see how it plays out. Felt like there's plenty of angles to hold indoors giving each players plenty of cover on their way to the sites. I think not only clipping the stairs is a good idea, but also the outdoor areas. I'm paying as much attention to the objects I should be avoiding on the ground as I am looking for enemies to shoot. I wouldn't remove the cars entirely but instead just place them either underneath the ground or put a displacement brush of debris over half of the car to keep the environment feeling busy. On a side note, I'm not sure how hard it would be to completely eliminate the indoor lighting and replace it with natural light since it is more than likely the only lights that would be working in the building would are emergency.

    Metal Gear Solid 5

Alright, so I managed to get a copy last night and take it for a spin! Call me a fucking nerd, but I was so excited my heart was racing. Played it for about 4 hours last night, before my eyes just gave up and forced me to go to bed, I couldn't believe that not only I was playing a new MGS game, I was playing what's most likely the last true MGS game, and oh man it's a glorious game... I won't spoil anything for anyone of course, but just to talk a little bit about it, the first couple of hours of the game are absolutely batshit kojisan-insane cinematic action. As for the core of the game itself, I only played a few missions, but I can already tell I'll be spending dozens of hours immersed into this world. It still feels like that familiar Metal Gear game we all know and love but at the same time it feels like a new kind of game I've never played before, almost feels like a new genre of game, it's so fresh! The freedom you have in here is absolutely unparalleled, and there's so many different ways to tackle the missions, that most likely no two playthroughs from two diferent people of a single mission will be the same, which of course adds a lot of replayability value to the game. It just feels so good to play a game that doesn't underestimate the players intelligence, quite the contrary it asks for the player to be creative with his thinking, this game breathes gameplay and I love it for it! Again, I only played a few hours but let me know if you have any questions, as long as they're not related to the story.

I think it looks cool, but why on earth are some terrorists risking their lives to blow up an embassy that has already been blown to pieces? In most cases, if anyone would blow up the rest of it, it would be the embassy security to make sure that none of their secret documents got into the hands of other people. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to be honest.. That being said, I think the theme would be an absolutely amazing hostage map, but you're probably a bit too into the development to easily change it around.
