I DID IT!! And it actually went quite well! It lasted for about an hour and a half, followed by some Q&A, and I'm totally exhausted. I'll write a sort of 'post-mortem' within the next day, right now I need to have a rest. Thank you for the support everyone!

Hello there, yeah okay I know.., a week before the deadline, but I've already been working on something incredibly unoriginal for about five or six weeks. Hehe I'm afraid this is going to be a shamefull display:P Glad there hasn't been deadline for signing up. I just couldn't decide if I wanted to fully commit to it because the last thing I want is spend weeks on a map and then having to trash it or worse... send it in unfinished. And of course after seeing some incredible WIP shots and now some beta's from some of the others the first thought in my head was and still is "Right.., OK nevermind!". That said, in the meantime I couldn't resist to finally use a layout sketch for duel/small ffa that I still had plans for and after a couple weeks it began to feel like it could actually become a playable map, so... there was no way back. Here's a couple of images that don't really show much yet, other than it being nothing special:) As much as I like and appreciate seeing custom textures I personally would have liked it more if we were all limited to the stock textures, you know almost like going back in time 15 years. I know stock gothic has been done to death but it would kind of make sense and feel more authentic in some way, so I go for 100% stock. Then again it's almost always a lot of fun to walk around in completely new scenery so I get why people want to use/create and see custom textures and whatnot. (LOL - Flipout's readme said he built his sexy ass map AND created textures in about one month? Hhmm...really. Damn man, it almost took me longer just to plan out a fun layout for a dead simple map.) Oh well back to work, still plenty of things to do but I doubt I'll make it in time, we'll see where it goes.

Cheers guys, my brother is leaving back again tomorrow but we made good progress so far: the house is very nearly isolated completely, the attic will soon be ready for the finishing pass (plaster, paint, floor boards, etc.) and I've got the hang of working with dirt plaster and dirt bricks to rebuild the broken walls. It's pretty cool since there's no chemicals in those, just dirt and straw, so you don't have to wear gloves and worry about breathing the dust etc. which is a nice change.

What version of bspc is that now then, cause I looked now here (didnt have time yesterday) and mine is from 2001. And also, when I'm thinking about it, I think I've heard a while ago, like 2-3 years ago, that it's better to compile with an older one, cause it doesn't cancel out if there are some unnecessary errors. Anyway, glad you got it to work Daniel! Låt glöggen flöda!

one more thing (I was the only player on the server so it didn't switch maps) the texture of this arch seems to have a nonsolid parameter, you just fall through it, when attempting to use it to get over the gap.
  24. 1 point
Found something. There's an arch that quite easily hinders the flow when jumping over the spotlights. Maybe you can just rise it a bit? Or PlayerClip the wall?

only had time to play one game, but man, that is one wicked map. the atmosphere is thick and the layout is so curvy and interesting. i really think your maps are taking q3 to another level. this looks more like a q4 map than a q3 map. like i said, i don't think i played enough to give any thorough feedback. though one thing i did notice was the combination of all the small steps, gradual elevation changes, and thin paths made it difficult to hold speed for a long time. usually q3 maps are flat for the most part. i wouldn't actually say this is actually a bad thing, though it is most certainly different from what i am used to and increases the learning curve quite a bit. you clearly have some massive modelling and texturing skills under your belt. it shows me where i could definitely use some improvement. good luck in the comp, i can tell you this is going to be one tough map to beat!

    The Jurassic World

Sorry, but the whole hybrid thing - and the fact that this is the 4th movie - brings back bad memories from the Alien series. Instead of making this a thorough reboot I'm afraid they're just trying to up the ante by adding something absurd that is more dangerous than a T-Rex or a pack of raptors. This is becoming more like Sharktopus than Jurrassic Park...

    The Jurassic World

At first I was like I was excited for this when I saw the teaser, but the moment I heard "hybrid" in the trailer I kinda lost a bit of that excitement. I wish they'd just stick to plain old dinosaurs but I guess this is a new movie for a new generation. They'll never top the first one in my eyes. I'll still go and see it because dinosaurs. And the main theme music.

And here are some ingame shots: -Originaly it was much more detailed, but after some discussions with my cousin (debtorr) it was changed to something more simple to increase gameplay. I also checked how the map looks, when you set high picmip, because all players play with picmip 10... And they want to see nice simply shapes with no useless stuff.. So, here you can compare same views with picmip 0 and 10..:

    Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar

Brilliant film, just got back from the cinema. The soundtrack was incredible, though it was a little hard to hear at times. I liked your theory Minos But the whole 'love transcends time and space' thing was a bit soppy... I honestly wanted to laugh out loud at that bit, and I saw people turning to their partners/mates and smiling whilst rolling their eyes But yeah I get what they're going for. We need more of these kinds of films! I absolutely loved the planet sections. I found that stuff really fascinating! Does anybody know if that world with the huge waves is a possibility? If the water was so shallow, how could it bunch up into those huge tidal waves? Also is there any evidence for the ice planets with no real landmass?

    Corwin's house renovation adventure

Been a while since I updated, I took a short holiday and left my family back in France with my parents so I can focus on the renovations. My brother will drop by again to help out too next week. I'm currently busy isolating the roof for the winter, I'm about halfway done. Those wood planks are a bitch to set up on your own though, I had to come up with tricks to hold them up while I align then etc. The good thing is that it's no problem if I breath the dust from the isolation material and I don't have to wear a suit or something like with some other materials like glass wool and stuff, makes it a bit simpler to handle. The electrical installation is now also completely redone in the whole house, although it's still missing 3 plugs and some of the switches are still cables dangling from a beam (because I have to fill up some of the walls). We also moved the electrical panel into a "fake" wall so we could open up a door to the bathroom from the corridor (so we free up one room which can become a bedroom). I also decided to break the ceiling of the living room to reveal all the beams and gain some height + give it some style. After exposing part of it, it's become clear that I have to break it all and leave just the beams and refill with isolation and plaster plates. Will do next week as we prepare to redo the floor of the bedrooms straight too. I'm also expecting an estimation for redoing the small bit of roof that's over the extension of the living room (the flat one in the first picture) so it matches the tiles from the top roof. Dunno if I'll have the dough though. I'd like to do it now since otherwise I would have to open up the living room again and once it's done I really don't want to have to touch it for a few years. I'm hoping we can move back in the house early next year, maybe mid-february, when the bedrooms and attic are done and I mainly just have finitions and the entrance + living room to finish.

Introduction : 1. How level design evolved throughout the years. 2. Where it is now. 3. What are the softwares available now and what are their strong/weaks points. 4. What is the main goal of a level designer, and where is the boundary between LD and art. 5. The importance of knowing the gameplay of the game you are working on. 6. The importance of storytelling. 7. The differences between multiplayer/single player. The important points for a LD : 1. The pacing. 2. The sense of scale. 3. The storytelling. 4. The verticality. 5. How to emphasize the objective. The creation of a level : 1. Defining where are you going. 2. Creation of the first sketches. 3. The first blockout. 4. The importance of testing and getting feedback. 5. Iteration. 6. Thanks for the article HP, moved it to the top of my stack. Sentura, thank you for explaining that process in more depth, interesting what you mention about jumping back and forth between 2D and 3D forms. I'm not too informed what gets covered in the course, from what I have gathered there is at least a good mix between the technical side of things and the creative. Thank you for telling me what you'd like to know about Nexusdog, those are things I'd certainly like to talk about and its reassuring to know others might be after that information. I'm trying to imagine what questions might be or want to be asked whilst I'm covering certain areas so I can pack in the most relevant info someone new to level design might want to hear about. I also like the idea of talking about reference gathering and how that influences ideas. I'll keep you informed as much as I can, right now I've been spending my evenings going over articles, trying to find ways of articulating things I feel I have a good understanding of, but just not sure how to convey that in clear words to others.

screenshot! not totally done detailing this area yet but thought it was worth showing. edit: a few more words on this... the visual goal of my map is to create a tech theme without all the usual tech assets, e.g. crates, pipes, and vents, but instead to create somewhat more classical roman/byzantine-inspired architecture and then find a way to texture it tech. that said, it won't all be vaults, domes, and arches - i am not holding myself back from adding some futuristic geometry into the mix. the area that you are looking at, however, was heavily inspired by st. bart's church in manhattan, which i happily discovered on a recent walk through midtown. as per usual in my development process, the theme has taken a major turn from what i initially set out to do, and the title will probably change as it no longer fits the map.

Cover multiple iterations constantly Cover the cost of moving around the different phases - redoing something in a sketch phase is very cheap, redoing it in the final phase is extremely costly. If you haven't been in a professional environment, don't talk about it. In general I wouldn't talk about professional environments, but rather what professional practices are (see above). I would personally not recommend Mapcore for them either, as it is not really a place for beginners. Instead I would link them to tutorials and encourage rapport between students. I think them seeing professionals post stuff could be detrimental towards their own abilities when just starting out. So really, make sure they communicate between each other well, talk to them about when to make changes and teach them some good design practices. That's the three things I would talk about in your case.

Here some pictures I took this weekend at my family's summerplace in the arcipelago of Sweden's biggest lake Vänern, on an island called "Brommö". I know there are some artifacts in the panorama pics I took but they really managed to show the beauty of that place. Enjoy some sweet swedish nature! (This last picture was taken at 01.00 in the middle of the night, it simply doesn't get very dark here dring the summer.)
