    Recruiting process vs salary

I'm with you guys that not talking about salaries openly only benefits the company... However, it's very risky and could go either way, to the point that if there is a large discrepancy, people can start to feel bitter. A friend of mine once said 'don't talk salary with friends, it only leads to bad things'. However, over the years you hear things; amounts here, tax %s there (which can indicate salary level). You get pay-rises and move up different pay-scales yourself. So you (hopefully) do get a sense of your own worth. There are also places like GlassDoor.com (which are hopefully reasonably accurate) you can read up on. Don't forget to do your research and take into account where you'll be living. The cost of renting a place in Amsterdam is much higher than the equivalent place in Budapest, so make sure your pay (after paying things like rent) reflects that. Always try to negotiate based on Net (take-home, after Tax) pay. This seems to be more of a European thing, because the taxes are so high here (but we get health insurance, pension and relatively cheaper education for that money) so ask what your take home pay will be. Finally, if you're moving somewhere else, you're looking for a step up, so don't be too timid. Don't go for 'equalizing' your salary, because a prospective company needs to equalize what you *could* get somewhere else, not what you're earning now. Don't ask for too much and look silly, do your research. But also don't ask for too little out of modesty, because it can be super hard to get a raise once you're in somewhere; the best way to get a raise is usually to move when you're at your peak.

I'm 100% with Skjalg and Warby on this. To throw my 2 cents in too, I earn roughly 33 000€ per year (before tax), which is 2122€ per month after taxes in UK as a TA on A:I.

    Recruiting process vs salary

Yeah man. That was one of the first advices I got when I started in the industry and it has proven to be a very a good one. Reasons why you should never talk about your own salary: - It's highly dependent on several factors, not just "how good" or "how fast" you are. Each person is unique and you can't really compare yourself to others from their salaries alone. - People get different raises and different bonuses, based not just on "how good they are" but as well as the manager's judgement, how well the company/team is doing, personal skills etc... - It might lead to competition, even if subconsciously. This is a natural tendency among men and one that I try to avoid personally. - It's very unprofessional. It's not hard to find out how much people make at a company anyway. If you feel you are being paid less than others, you can always do some googling or ask people who have left the company how much they used to make. Personally, I'd rather not know what my colleagues make or even which score they get in their annual reviews, as this often leads to uncomfortable situations. Ex: A friend who has been in the company for a few years was super happy when he finally got a good score and asked me what my score was. I congratulated him and changed subject immediately. My score was a bit higher and had I told him, he could probably take it as competition or even worse, feel like I was diminishing his accomplishment.

    [CS:GO] De_Data WIP

Hey guys, I've been lurking around these forums for quite a long time and I'm also a mapper on GameBanana. My formal game name is ]ES[ Church Xx ]GaD[. I've been mapping for about 7 years for CS:S, Portal 2, HL2. I've made gungame, zombiemod, defuse and even surf maps for CS:S (although most of them exist with an old account that I couldn't find a few years back). I am working on a competitive CS:GO map called De_Data. I'm looking for plenty of constructive criticism and anything you guys can do to help me out with my design/level flow. For now, the link to view what is up on GameBanana as a WIP here. I'll also post those same pictures of the map right here (a few of them won't seem to show up including the overly important top View) For this competitive map I've been trying to make a map that has interesting sight lines and overall I'm happy with the concept I've chosen for the map. I am also asking for gameplay testing with groups of people since I've only been able to test with 1-2 people and have received most of my feedback from them. Thank you all for the help! Please check out the WIP link above to view all of the pictures as some of them wouldn't show up when i tried to link them. EDIT -- Yeah, the links are working now. Interesting that they kept coming up broken yesterday

I'm 100% with Warby on this. Sharing what you earn should be mandatory. Hell it was/is even public knowledge in Norway. (the tax listings are/were public). They added the requirement that you have to log into your personal account (requires your id and some codes that are personal). And the person you look up gets a notification. I don't understand why this is a reason against sharing? What you are saying is 100% correct though, I just don't agree with the assessment that the uniqueness and comparing of employees should only be one mans job (your boss). I know for a fact that my boss does not know/care about all the qualities that our lead designer likes about me. Why shouldn't our lead designer have a say about my value to the team? Same point as above, basically. I don't agree that one manager should be the only guy to judge your skills. Competition is healthy, I think, especially when it benefits the guys receiving the pay check. In order to receive a higher pay check you actually have to earn it, and not only in the mind of one guy who you can (in some cases) suck up to, but to many people who would most likely value you higher for your contribution to the team or business. That's bullshit. At least where I work. But it might be at your place of work, because what is, and what is not, unprofessional is up to the people who work where you work. This thread is about trying to change that stigma I think. Finally, I'd just like to throw it out there that I earn 360 000 NOK before taxes (which ranges from 35~45% in Norway) Which is roughly 60 000$ or 44 000€ per year. Which is 3666€ per month.

We all agree that companys "encourage" not talking about salary across the board? ... right ? Is there anyone thinking that this is "NOT" because of a 100% economical reason ? Because let me tell you: all the touchy/feely/tip-toe/social-awkwardness arguments I have heard so far do not even factor into this decision/behavior on the companys part. it is in fact as simple as this: Does everbody knowing about each others salary cost us more or less at the end of each month ? More ?! Okay than we don't want people to know!

Going to the gym is like a korean MMORPG

Stop jogging. Eat grass fed beef and frozen salmon at least once a week, more if you can afford to. Cook broccoli and asparagus, sweet potatoes as a treat. Drink lots of water and cut the soda. Berries once in a while as a treat. Eat pounds of dark chocolate until your eyes blur. That shit is delicious and good for you. Eat as many avocados as humanly possible. Buy sea salt. Take krill oil, vitamin d, vitamin c There you go you're a super human ninja now. Thank me later with sixteen karate chops on a shark The chocolate, avocados, sea salt, berries and veggies are cheap as hell, so no excuses. The animal meat is key though

I think most of our excessive tax goes to corrupt politicians and stuff like renaming the town hall plaza to the rainbow plaza. Right now the political seat has draped itself in a law that shrouds them from public insight, which makes it difficult to know for sure. But I digress, this is about wages, not politics.

The UK's garbage set-up seems to work pretty well from what I've seen, although I'd be interested to hear if those who've lived here and elsewhere think otherwise. Generally, garbage trucks go house to house, and each house has two or three wheelie bins: one for general waste (green), one for recyclable waste (blue), and one for garden/organic waste (brown). Apartments are a bit different as there's usually a communal bin area or chutes, but those are just bigger versions of the house-to-house ones. Anyway, having read more posts I do agree that sharing salaries between direct colleagues could easily lead to uncomfortable conversations. But then, if somebody does join and earn like £5k–£10k more than someone who's been there for years and is just as good, shouldn't that poor sucker get to know he's being paid so much less? If nobody talks about it, how would they? Of course you can always look at other jobs and averages, but they can vary so much between regions that it's rarely particularly useful. Plus, you might not want to leave your current employer or rock the boat too much, especially in games where there isn't exactly a plethora of jobs in every area. It seems like employees are the only ones who can empower themselves in this area by sharing knowledge. Glassdoor is a solid idea; it'd be great if everyone at every company anonymously put their role/team and salary on there so you can almost always get an idea of what your cohorts are getting paid without knowing exactly who. Probably a good compromise, and if it became as standard as maintaining a LinkedIn profile it could be extremely powerful.

You can't just expect people to have a good attitude towards someone who earns more than them in the same position, especially if they have been there for a shorter time or if they in another way think it's unjust. Perceived injustice without rationalization will lead to bitterness almost regardless of how "pure" a person is - it is so ingrained in our nature. I don't think blaming the company is a solution either, but asking them for a rationalization definitely is. Perhaps the solution is rooted in that employers should be given a rationalization for each employee's salary when they first employ said employee. That way at least people know what they are getting into. But of course this isn't in the company's best interest, as I'm sure they want to save and cut as much money as possible by paying people less - even if it's small amounts. In other news, this has been a very interesting thread and discussion. We should have more of these kinds of debates rather than the contrived threads of personal struggles or posting about our new material gains (although I am guilty of the latter).

Yeah and companies can fuck off with their "But you don't have much experience" bullshit. If I'm optimising half of your entire god damn game and fixing EVERYTHING that you don't know how to do, redoing work of senior artists because you don't think its good enough ... you can afford to pay me more than a mid-level salary. Experience or no, TA on AAA = you are kinda screwed they leave.

    Recruiting process vs salary

It's interesting how companies have successfully drilled it into everyone that discussing salary is somehow a bad thing. If someone on your team is on more or less than you, isn't everyone being aware of that a good thing? The only downside I can see is that if someone finds out they're on significantly less than you (or vice versa) despite both being at more or less the same level in terms of skills then they might feel that the company is doing them a disservice and get hurt feelings. But once armed with that knowledge, they can then discuss it with the company or move elsewhere if need be — if they do nothing, they have nobody to blame. As it is, people can just end up sat there for years not really knowing whether or not they could or should be earning more. I'm not saying everyone should be posting their salaries on Facebook or something, because obviously it's irrelevant to people outside your profession (or even team) and is likely to just cause jealousy in some cases. But there should be no shame in a team discussing each others' salaries so that everyone in the team knows how their employer is valuing them. It suits companies very well if nobody knows that dude A is paid like twice as much as dudes B and C, because those dudes won't go chasing the company for more money and will remain blissfully ignorant that they could be earning twice as much if they pushed for it. That's definitely the biggest issue with this weird stigma about discussing salaries.
