Tropes vs Women in Video Games

See in my mind the whole issue isn't about equality at all. Equality isn't to take away from men the things they enjoy like depictions of sexy women with big wobbling breasts (and stigmatizing them for that they like such things). Especialy not in a free flowing medium like art. To try and suppress this for political reasons is an attack on freedom. To me equality is about equal rights and opportunities, nothing more and nothing less, which i support 100% for both genders and everything inbetween.

    CS:GO - de_print

Hi, I would like to show you the map I'm working on for the gamebanana-cevo mapping contest. Still work in progress, I'm trying to make something with nice graphics and great visibility, so it's no really easy to do but I'm trying. The layout is already established, purposing something similar in several respects to de_nuke. Layout : General point of view lower level point of view I hope you'll appreciate it and this is better than fy_pool_day (which i know many of you don't like I understand :/ )

    SimCity V

Sounds just like the UK??? I'm seriously thinking of getting SimCity 4 with Rush Hour and waiting until the next sequel of this. It seems like they have a good foundation for a few generation of SimCity but there are far too many problems for it to be considered ready. All these simulation issues are... crazy.

The more I play this game the more I see that its completely broken to the core. Anyone else noticed the population inflation? The city adviser is always requesting more residential areas to bring in more workers no matter what I do. What is annoying is that from all the people who live in my town, only 20% or so actually do something (either work, shop or study), the other 80% just sits around watching TV all day apparently. I wonder if they are just phantoms to make the game look like it handles more people than it actually does. Also: I feel very disrespected for paying full price for this broken mess. Anyway, back to SC2k on my lunch breaks

You are basicly repeating her claims without further reflecting on them. There are no proven sexist repercussions in the Peaches character. That's what Anita claims and doesn't provide any evidence for, not even anecdotes. So why should Nintendo care? They should care because the trope is overused not because of the delusions of Anita Sarkeesian who sees methodical sexism and misogony pretty much everywhere (just watch her older vids). Ther's a video where she complains that she feels left out of the geek sphere because of the obnoxious porn ads on an illegal bittorrent website. In another video she argues that an ad for Bayonetta in a Tokyo subway encourages sexual assault. I'm sorry but i can't take such shenanigans serious.

D3: Your comment was retarded, though. I think it’s comparable to the sciences and engineering, which are not so much a gentlemen’s club but a sausage fest. There’s nothing particularly exclusionary going on here, in fact I’m sure they’d love to have more diversity too, it’s just a field comparatively less women are interested in. A feminist friend has told me the lack of interest is itself evidence of sexism. Gender is cultural and therefore the disinterest from women must have a discriminatory root-cause somewhere. But, if you really want to go that route, gaming has been stigmatised as something for male losers until very recently and that’s also going to be a factor in it growing inwardly as a male dominated pastime as well... Though I think this debate is unproductive and don't buy gender is a cultural construct anyway. Agreed, I don’t like hiring quotas because it is actual discrimination introduced to fix perceived discrimination. Well, she doesn't try to hide her agenda. It’s no surprise to see feminism latch hold of a subculture and demand change. But that doesn't mean their complaints are invalid. This is why I just tried to focus on her evidence and conclusions.

I think a lot of the criticism about donations stems from the fact that this video series got an unprecedented level of funding. I've had discussions elsewhere about how Kickstarter itself could handle this phenomenon as it's sure to happen again. More transparency concerning how excess funds are used will probably help calm people's fears that projects attaining huge funds will spend most of the money recklessly or on personal stuff — something which can and has happened already with numerous Kickstarter projects, including ironically enough a 'male tropes in video games' Kickstarter that was set up to to counter/mock Anita's project. Scams are already starting to become a big thing on Kickstarter and I suspect a lot of people began thinking Anita was going that way considering it took quite a lot of time for the first video to come out and the results (so far) are questionable. On top of that, the huge amount of funding the videos got and hype that went along with it has probably raised peoples' expectations to unrealistic levels, so no matter what she puts out it's going to disappoint. The fact that this video has been rabidly posted all over the internet by Anita's fans probably hasn't helped, as people often instinctively reject things that're making lots of headlines (like people who think they're too cool for memes). In my case I think my expectations were relatively tame and I was still left a little wanting by the first video, but I'm receptive to the rest of the series being better. And I'd rather not spend too much time going into specific reasons I didn't enjoy the video because that's kind of like asking someone to explain why they don't like a certain TV show or documentary. Some draw you in and hook you, some don't. For me, Anita's didn't. But I do respect her message and cause, and while she might not be the best spokesperson for it it's great to see that people are actually taking time to discuss this topic in detail. In that sense she's succeeded wonderfully.

I was talking about podcasts and websites I follow. I was specifically citing my own experience with the internet and new media, and how they use patronage, voluntary user contribution, to function. I was actually using the exact opposite of generalization to make my point, Vilham. Reading your posts makes me feel like I'm reading youtube comments. I agree, actually. There's been some interesting (though frequently disagreeable, personally) discussion on gender in general. However, while I have seen many people attack the video in the OP, nobody's actually criticized any individual element of it, just overarching statements like "It's boring" or comments about the person who made it, and I feel like that speaks to the point of view CampaignJunkie was expressing. The point Rick made about thinking about other people and how they might not view things the way you view them is important.

    Now playing - 2018

Just finished S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. Too bad Pripyat itself isn't as interesting as the other areas, but one thing is sure: Time to play Shadow of Chernobyl again!
