    Dragons: wild skies

Bumping this thread with some cool images from the development of the game pulled out from my friend's Ed blog. Some of the boards from the high design of the game's structure: Board with some of the flight control schemes we planned: Some more board pictures. We actually do some documenting just like this, draw stuff up on the board, discuss, then take a picture and upload it to the wiki. Some early documentation, now detailing some finer mechanics of the game: We received a lot of models from Dreamworks and Cartoon Network, but mostly where character models or the Dragons themselves. The environments where not only created here from movie stills but some where entirely drawn up from scratch: The interface was a very troublesome process to get to where we wanted to. We had to go back and forth a dozen of times until we where happy with it, and it ended up being one of the most engaging elements of the game, after the environments: Environment concepts and process: An early gameplay prototype: Some of the environment basemeshes:

    Dragons: wild skies

Hi everyone! It is a great pleasure for me to present to you our latest project: Dragons: wild skies. This is the best gameplay video I could find of it: After roughly 4 months of production, much effort was put in this game based off the world of Dreamwork's "How to train your dragon". The game is featured on Cartoon Network's site for the premiere of the TV series "Dragons: Riders of Berk". You can play it right now on the following link, just sign in on the website e have a look http://www.cartoonne... ... index.html The game is a dragon flight simulator with gorgeous environments created by our team. As a young dragon tamer and trainer you have to brave the wilds and learn about each dragon before you are finally able to ride it and complete the many challenges scattered around the maps. I'll have some more details about production and pre-production soon, but for now I would really appreciate to hear what do you guys think of it, both about the execution and presentation as well as gameplay. This was a real milestone for us as it is not an advergame like all the previous ones we have done as well as a big challenge and we put a lot of effort to bring it to life in such a tight schedule. I'm really proud of the whole team and would be really happy to share your thoughts, criticisms and compliments with them

    What are you playing now?

I nearly broke down into tears of frustration trying to get this to work satisfactorily today, but now I am weeping tears of joy while playing through old favourites like Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island. It occurred to me I could install all the emulation shit on my work laptop and plug it into my TV. That was the plan, which worked in the end but involved: Special wires needed because my laptop outputs Mini-HDMI rather than HDMI Bluetooth receiver needed to get my PS3 controller to work with the PC wirelessly (which is awesome when it actually works BTW); there were endless driver issues getting this to work though Needed even more cables because there was too much audio lag when plugging into the TV and then outputting the sound via my audio system, so now I'm going through the HDMI-enabled audio receiver Lots of emulator configuration required to get the right balance of speed and prettiness on a relatively average laptop So basically: Jesus fuckin' CHRIST. But it's all worth it, and now just as I'm ready to enjoy the fruits of my labour I have to go to bed for work tomorrow. But this weekend...! One thing emulators will always have over re-releases like on the Wii virtual console: increased quality. DKC looks so great with the smoothing filters that make the pixel jaggies look like soft lines, and the music is better than ever as the emulator can output at a far better level of quality than an actual SNES ever could. Yeah it's not quite authentic, but they would so have put out CD-quality audio if they could. Of course I'd still have chosen to avoid all this hassle if Nintendo hadn't removed all the DKC games from the virtual console.

The FOV on the pc version sucks major cock bags and made me feel pretty ill. One day all developers will learn how to handle FOV and not let the rubber helmet wearing intern do it.

    'Paradise'

It was never a secret a sequel was in the works. I can't say Im too pleased with the whole idea of involving a god in the movie, our "makers". But I guess the Aliens universe had to evolve somewhere, I just hope it's not one of those religion vs science shit movies again. I'm more than ok with the Aliens being just a really nasty space parasite.

    - invest in a domain name - I look at your nexuiz levels and think, "okay blocky arena thing" -- you have all these additional buttons and JS animations that are unnecessary... just do something simple and straightforward like this: http://magnarj.net/ the work should speak for itself - no one's arguing you have to be a great environment artist, but I think you do have to be a decent one, or know how to arrange props in a pleasing way, if only just to sell your map concepts further than "blocky arena thing" or "random low LoD farcry3 props arranged on a flat terrain"... I don't know if these play well or not, but I look at these screenshots and I don't care about finding out if they play well the fact of the matter is that they just don't look professional, and an employer would have to invest a lot of resources in training and educating you when you should be training yourself with mods and personal projects anyway... think about who you're competing against - anyway: don't give up, make more levels, the only way to get better is to keep working and practicing

    Dishonored

It's definitely the best game of this year, hands down. It's a love letter to the old Looking Glass games, and it's a damn good one at that.
